Maud Pie's bedroom was mostly quiet, save for the ticking of the hands of her clock, and the soft, tired crooning of an exhausted blue unicorn.

"Hush now, quiet now, it's time to go to sleep already...."

In her arms, Trixie softly rocked her infant son. Moondancer, just a few weeks old, had long ago tuckered himself out crying, and his wails had since faded into tiny whimpers. His eyelids would droop every so often and he would almost nod off, before stubbornly jerking back awake and fussing quietly, with all the indignation of a baby that refused to go to goddamn sleep. He watched his mother with wide, watery eyes, and sniffled.

"Oh shush." Trixie chided gently. She booped his snout lightly with her hoof, smiling. "You're not even upset anymore. You just want attention, you tiny little drama queen."

"He takes after his mother." A low voice called from the doorway. Trixie looked up to find Maud watching her through the darkness.

"The great and powerful Trixie resents that remark." Trixie's mouth curved up in a weary smile. "....I haven't had any luck with him, Maudie. At this point, my arms are getting tired from rocking."

"I can help."

"Oh thank you." Trixie heaved a sigh. "Trixie could use a bre-eEEP!" She squawked as Maud quite suddenly came around and lifted her into her arms, with a ridiculous ease that made the wretched schoolfilly part of Trixie's brain swoon, just a little. "Maudie! I thought you were going to hold Moony!"

"This is better." Maud hummed. "Now I can hold you both." She began rocking the mother and foal gently, and to Trixie's indignation, it was rather soothing.

"Ah....a-aha! T-Trixie already knew you cared about her baby-though you love to deny it-but she didn't know you'd l-latch onto any opportunity to physically touch Trixie herself-"

"Yes." Maud agreed, honest as always. "It would seem I've grown to enjoy being in close proximity to you. How odd. You're so soft and squishy and unlike a rock...and yet I like you."

"Soft and squishy?" Trixie huffed, cheeks burning. "Well, excuse Trixie! Not everypony can be hard and tough and packed with....r-rugged rock-farming muscles..." She touched a hoof softly to Maud's muscled chest, before checking herself. "T-Trixie's not attracted to it at all!"

"That's a shame." Maud said casually. "I've come to accept that I find you quite beautiful. I had hoped you would reciprocate that perception toward me."

Trixie made a noise like a caught rabbit. "Wha? B-b-beautiful? You think-me?"

"Yes. Your coat is soft, your mane is nice, and your eyes glitter like fresh cut lepidolite. I've been feeling curiously drawn to you ever since you moved in....I've come to greatly enjoy your company, and even find amusement in your fits of squawking anger. It's all very strange. A little nopony rock scientist like me, entertaining feelings for a famous magician. How foolish of me."

Maud's expression and tone hadn't changed at all, and Trixie's mouth worked furiously, trying to process what was happening. Maud thought she wasn't good enough for Trixie? Maud, the pony who'd taken Trixie in off the streets and fed her and cared for her and tolerated her when Trixie fell into one of her depressions? Maud, who always held Trixie when she needed a place to cry, and took Moony when Trixie needed to work, and always had dinner waiting when Trixie got home? Maud, the sturdy little rock pony that Trixie'd been nursing a ridiculous crush on for the last few months? That Maud Pie?

Trixie gulped a breath for courage. "Maudie, you-"

"Shh." Maud placed a hoof to Trixie's lips.

"He's asleep."

Trixie looked down. Moondancer had finally lost the battle against sleep. He lay curled up against her chest, still, save for his slow, gentle breath, and the occasional twitch of his hooves as he dreamed.

"....Finally." Trixie sighed. She leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to her baby's forehead. "Stubborn little bugger."

"Again, he takes after you. The stalactite doesn't fall far from the cave." Maud too, leaned down to kiss Moony's face. The sight made Trixie melt.

"...Maudie." Trixie bit her lip. "We....er. We obviously have a lot to talk about. About all those wonderful t-things you said about Trix-er, me. So...I'm going to go put Moony in his crib, and then you and I will have a talk. And you will become confident in the fact that you are the most gorgeous, most amazing pony that Trixie has ever met. And then Trixie will g-give you a goodnight kiss."

"Like the one you gave Marshmallow?"

"N-no, idiot. Er....steamier. More passionate! So loving and tender that your dumb stony heart will melt!"

"Oh my."

"And then we will cuddle! And hold hooves! Trixie will tell you how beautiful and special you are, and how very lucky Trixie is to have you as her rock.....And...and then you will look Trixie in her eyes and ask her to be your very special somepony. And T-Trixie...." Trixie held back a sniffle. Stupid postpartum hormones. "....Trixie will say yes."

Maud went silent, lost in thought. She was so quiet that Trixie began to began to fear that she'd made a terrible mistake-

"...Well then." Maud said, interrupting Trixie from her worrying. Trixie was shocked to see that Maud was smiling. "We can't get started on all that until you put Marshmallow to bed." And she kissed Trixie's cheek, earning a delighted giggle. "You should hurry up...so I can get a start on rocking your world."

"Maudie!"
