Description oh god stop smiling
~~~
"Hey, Artemis? We're friends, right?"
"Debatable." Artemis looked up from their book to face the pink mare before them. "You just started following me around after we met at the Grand Galloping Gala. In fact, I am starting to wonder how you keep slipping past castle security-"
"Oh, no force in Equestria could keep me away from my Artie." Jamboree sang. She heaved a wistful sigh, lifting a hoof to her forehead. "We're gonna be special someponies one day. I can feel it."
"Your attempts at courtship are as baffling as they are amusing."
"See?" Jam waggled her eyebrows in victory. "You already find me amusing. Now if only I could finally get a smile on that sweet, fluffy face..."
Artemis looked away, suddenly shy. "I've been told that my smile is...unfortunate."
"By who?" Jam demanded, stomping a hoof down. "Who had the huevos rancheros to say something so horrible?" She leaned forward and gripped Artemis' face in her hooves, squishing their cheeks. "Don't you listen to 'em, Artie. I bet your smile is gorgeous. Won't you show me?"
"Jamboree..." Artemis frowned.
"Smile, smile, smile." Jam lilted obnoxiously. She nuzzled their muzzles together, because she knew it'd turn Artemis' face crimson. "Fill my heart up with sunshine, Artie! I'm not gonna quit singing til you do it..." She threatened, eyes full of affection.
"...Alright."
Artemis sighed in resignation, and Jamboree bounced, victorious. The heir to the night looked away for a moment to gather themselves. Then Artemis smiled.
To her credit, Jamboree managed to keep most of her scream inside.
"...S-see?" She squeaked. "I t-told you it'd be...uh, gorgeous."
Artemis smiled wider, and Jamboree bravely didn't flee like a school filly. "Truly?"
"...Truly." Jam answered. After the initial shock of the fangs, she could reason that it was sort of cute, in a nightmarish sort of way. She leaned forward and pressed a sweet kiss to Artemis' cheek. "It's the prettiest smile in the world, Artie. I wanna see it all the time."
Artemis laughed, and the sound was sort of a cross between a school filly's bashful giggle and a hell demon's deep cackle, but Jam didn't mind. Absently, she found herself humming the Smile song under her breath.
"Cause I love to see you smile, smile, smile, yes I do..."
Artemis => They? My grammar side is confuzzled.
Nonsense. While "they" is typically used to indicate plural people, it has always had a secondary use for referring to a single person of unspecified gender. For example, this exchange is entirely grammatically correct.
"Hey, the mailperson knocked on our door today."
"Oh yeah? What were they trying to deliver?"
or
"Go ask someone outside if they can help us."
or
"Be sure to ask the new teacher if they'd like coffee."
So "they" is very much so used to denote a person of unspecified or ambiguous gender. It's reasonable that, in our modern world, the word would be adopted by non-binary or androgynous people as a gender-neutral pronoun to refer to themselves. After all, English, like all languages, is fluid and always evolving. Artemis is non-binary (they don't identify particularly as male or female), so Arte is referred to as "they".
Sorry to have offended you.
Really what I was asking in the most nonspecific and roundabout way was whether nightmare moon had somehow infested Artemis at their conception. Or some other cool duel personality reason...
Also, if I remember my grammar lessons ("but I may be remembering entirely wrong as I still capitalize after quotes." She said mostly to herself.) in formal grammar or "correct" grammar (whatever that means)"he/she" is suppose to be used in a case of unknown gender.
If he or she would step forward and present themselves to the king...
And "they" was only reserved for plural situation.
But then again, Language is constantly evolving and I'm not an English major so what do I know.
Again sorry to have offended anyone with my question, but I was looking for backstory which I found several pictures later. Thank you for your patience in replying to my terribly phrased inquiry.
I do really enjoy your works. They jump off the screen with emotions and tantalize the viewer with hints of a story to explain then. Well done (not that my words have any weight to them in concerns to how others others view them. This is only my humble opinion and observation).Β
"He/she" and "he or she" is also correct, but cumbersome to say and write. I much more frequently hear and read "they" when someone is referring to a single, ambiguous-gender person. Can't say I often hear people say "A police officer is on the way, what do you want me to tell him or her?". The alternative, "A police officer is on the way, what do you want me to tell them?" rolls off the tongue easier and is more common.
The point being, the word "they" has two primary uses (plural pronoun, singular pronoun for person of unspecified gender), and now, in our contemporary world, has adopted an additional use (preferred singular pronoun for some people of non-binary gender identities). Artemis is not a he or she, and prefers to be addressed as a gender neutral "they".
Their mother is also Luna, and Nightmare Moon is seemingly connected to Luna.
Nightmare Moon had fangs.
Even if that wouldn`t work, generation skipping is also a thing, and they could have gotten the fangs from that.
πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1
pinocchioo65 In reply to MidnightShadowstars [2017-12-11 00:52:24 +0000 UTC]
Nightmare moon is Luna in her very bad days, lol. more seriously, they are one and the same entity, Nightmare Moon is just the evil version of Luna. For the fangs, I doubt that this is a genetic inheritance or so that would mean that the little one was infected by the black magic of his mother if it is from her that he holds them ... which would like that Luna has not been completely purified. Oh holy goodness. And even skipping a generation, only the really bad ponies have fangs so I think it works or Artemis is a master of evil and hides his game XD well.
