Yoshi could be best described as a drifter, coming in and out. He’s not anti-social, but he just never hanged around people nor had enough adults in his life to really teach Yoshi the proper ways of socializing. So he may just slip in and say hello, or he could very well just stand there staring into space. This has been in some ways beneficial and yet equally detrimental to whom he is. His loneliness and lack of attention from older figures has made him quite independent and he can handle working alone on large tasks. He’s not afraid of a lot of stuff and tends to go forwards without concern, while his loneliness and generally lack-lustre life has allowed him to see a lot of good in the little things. He has no concern impressing others and will happily join in any mockery from word play to mean spirited comments about his size. It’s hard to essentially get Yoshi down in the dumps, though it’s not as if he walks around grinning ear to ear.
But he’s stubborn about his ways and rarely steps out of his comfort zone; he does not like working with others on projects and if he has to, he’ll likely just try to take hold of the whole project and do it alone. On top of that since no one expected him to be extremely motivated and into anything beyond sitting in front of a TV to play games, he’s lazy and just goes through life. Ask what he wants to be or do and he has no idea. Does he want kids; does he want to go out with someone? He barely knows what he wanted to do in the next hour and so just lets things happen. If it was not for the fact that he’s a little glutton, he’d likely just drop out of school and bum around. But his brother continues to give him food and treats in exchange for hard work, and he’s developed such a sweet tooth that he might as well be eating something at every waking moment.
And while generally kind and seeing no value in being cruel to people, large amounts of affection or attention on him gets him flustered and he tends to generally be awkward around large groups. Two friends is already an overwhelming thought, so when he’s in a large gathering and becomes the center of attention he tries to find a way out and fast. The only really attention he lets anyone shower on him is his father and brother. After that he tends to just be on the sidelines, which has usually kept him friendless, something he tends to associate with people thinking he’s weird and awkward which he is. He just does things without forethought such as sleeping wherever he is, lying down, taking his shirt off without reason or connotation, he just does things and that tends to get people turned off from wanting to know the weirdo who likes to sit outside in the dark.
Biography:
Yoshi was the younger of two sons born to the Ueno household. As but a young toddler life in their home was fine. His father was a herpetologist who opted to teach courses on reptiles and amphibians at a small college, and his mother was the classic stay at home parent who chose to raise her children. For a short time their life was simple, stable and pleasant. But it only lasted for so long, before their mother began to yearn for more. Slowly regretting her decision to drop out of college and start a family, she began to grow restless until the right man swooped in, scooped her up and took her away. None saw it coming, just one day she was there and the next she was gone. Yoshi’s father was devastated, he had no idea what he did wrong or what he could have done to reach out to her. But so shaken up by the incident and rather heartbroken, he came to distance himself from home life.
Using the excuse that an upcoming research project would be a one in a lifetime experience for him, he took the offer to help study some bizarre species of salamander in South America and left Japan a year after his wife left. They were placed in the care of their grandparents, who well meaning was a bit too old for either boy to really rely on for much. So it fell to his older brother of six years, Osamu, to take care of Yoshi. He did the cooking when he learned how to do it, did the cleaning, and when he was in high school took up a part-time job to even have some spare cash to lend to his little brother. He practically embodied the role of mother, father and brother, which much like his father took Osamu out of the home most of the time.
With no brother, mother, father, and his grandparents too elderly to do much, Yoshi was forced to figure out ways to entertain himself. Typically it involved wandering out of the house and just finding things to do, like going to the park by his lonesome or wandering into convenience stores nearby. In his wanderings he came upon a small arcade and took to the place instantly. With no games at home and not a lot of toys to play with, this was the best he could get and Yoshi would take it. Any time he was not studying he was playing games. When it was the weekend, he played games. His birthday? Go to the arcade to play games. It came to a point where upon starting elementary school he just outright skipped classes to play at the arcade.
It was when he received his first failing grade that Osamu began to realize that he was becoming as bad as his parents had been and decided to make an effort to interact with Yoshi and raise him. But by then he was an awkward, quiet, but certainly independent ten year old that did whatever he pleased without thought or debate. Yoshi could barely sit in a room with Osamu before he just got up to leave when scolded, or gave short rather blank answers when engaged in conversation. Osamu, but a teen then, had no idea what to do to reach out. The only thing that ever got Yoshi to listen and behave was when he was rewarded with baked goods and desserts, a skill Osamu had practically mastered in his effort to cook for his brother.
So if it was food that got Yoshi’s attention, it was food he would get. Any time he wanted Yoshi to do his homework, he would make some cake. If he needed his little brother to clean the house with him, a promise of pudding would do the trick. Oh it was a terrible decision that just made Yoshi, on top of being lazy and socially awkward, a glutton to boot. But Osamu was just a child as well, a mature one but still a kid who had no idea how to raise his brother.
So thankfully after nearly seven years of not seeing their father, the man finally decided it was time to return home and stop running away. But the damage was done then. Osamu did not in the least like his father who he loathed for burdening him with so much, and Yoshi was so set in his ways that he might as well have been someone else from the little toddler he knew seven years ago. But Mr. Ueno did what he could to pick up the pieces and tried to reconnect with his kids, though with Osamu shutting him out he could only really reach out to Yoshi. He encouraged Yoshi to embrace his hobby, even buying him few games and consoles in order to let Yoshi have a less money-draining way of playing video games.
That was pretty much the dynamic of their household from then on; Osamu who took to cooking as much as Yoshi took to gaming worked his way into Culinary school, his father took to trying to be a father quite late in the game, and Yoshi just did what he always did, drifting along through life till he found his way into Tachibana-high.
Likes and Dislikes:
( + ) Video games, sweets, snacking, video games, naps, spooky and generally classical music, animal videos, snakes, lying down, staring at the sky, sitting outside in the night, watching people cook, giant plush anything (though typically dinosaur plushies), hand puppets, purin (he will outright drool at the mention of it)
( – ) Diets, exercise, lots of activity, big dogs, any nauseating smells, loud music, mornings, ever questioning his favourite games, going to bed early, “healthier” versions of any food he is a fan of, touching his hair, Touching. His. Hair. Ever, real blood, any injury to him (minor or not)
Extra:
- Has a pet corn snake “cleverly” named Cornhilda, it’s not uncommon for him to sit in his room with Cornhilda around his neck
- He will glare at most dogs because he was bit by one as a kid, but will turn and run at the sight of a big one- the only time he expresses any fear
- Has a massive t-rex plush he sleeps with; won that at an arcade a long time ago
- Yoshi is fickle with his hair because the last time he let anyone brush, cut or mess with his hair he had more gel in it than he thought humanly possible, so he just does not let people do anything to it
- His brother Osamu makes a mean Purin; which also means that if Yoshi has one he will NOT share it with anyone
- Has at least one box of chocolate-strawberry pocky/cookies/anything on hand to snake on; he just loves those two flavours combined
- Is a bit of a wuss when it comes to pain, in that he tends to fixate on little things like a paper cut for hours
- He is so ticklish that simply brushing your hand over his arms or near his neck without even touching gets a reaction out of him
- Any compliment directed to him and he’ll start giving you weird looks
- Yoshi cannot cook; at all
