Description Goddess of the Moon, the hunt, the wilderness, midwives and chastity, she is the protector of children, young maidens and animals (and is my personal favourite Greek god). Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and the titaness Leto and the twin sister of Apollo, when Leto was forbidden by Hera to give birth to the twins on solid earth the floating island Delos turned out to be exempt from the rule and Leto finally gave birth to Artemis, however the birth of Apollo turned out to much more difficult and though newly born herself Artemis became her mother's midwife and was able to help deliver her brother. Hera's abuse of young Artemis did not stop there, it was known she had developed a passion for archery and after receiving the gift of a golden bow from her father Hera would appear and proceeded to break the bow out of spite before giving young Artemis a beating. A weeping Artemis sat on Zeus' lap and he granted her ten wishes, she wanted things such as domain over the mountains, to help women during the pain of childbirth, a new bow and most notably to always remain a virgin as in Ancient Greece marrying essentially meant becoming a man's property, to Artemis protecting her virginity meant protecting her independence. She spent the rest of her childhood in the wild practicing until she was a master archer and striving to become as badass a huntress as possible.

Artemis was highly defensive of her virginity and didn't hesitate to kill anyone who attempted to rape her or just looked at her naked, though sometimes the punishment differed when it came to the latter such as when the boy Siproites caught a look, Artemis turned him into a girl. Artemis was not the only maiden goddess on Olympus as Athena and Hestia also remained virgins but neither were as defined by it as Artemis and as such neither earned as much of Aphrodite's disdain by rejecting her domain as Artemis, perhaps Hestia's warmth and Athena's diplomacy were more effective in salvaging ties with the Love Goddess than Artemis' middle finger response to her matchmaking attempts... Hippolytus, the son of the hero Theseus and the Amazon queen Hippolyta, devoted himself to Artemis and took a vow of chastity which annoyed Aphrodite who influenced his step mother Phaedra to fall in love with her step son and try and seduce him, when Hippolytus rejected her advances Phaedra committed suicide and left a note accusing Hippolytus of trying to rape her. Theseus, disgusted with his son, immediately banished him and prayed to Poseidon to send a sea monster to kill Hippolytus. Artemis found Hippolytus' body just in time and rushed him to the healer Asclepius who managed to revive him. Artemis then informed the guilt-ridden Theseus of the truth and swore revenge on Aphrodite. Artemis' wrath is fierce but her protection is equally so which she focused much of on defending those less able to defend themselves.

Her symbols are the Moon and the bow and arrow and her sacred animals are the deer and the bear.
