God of knowledge and the wisest of the Aesir, Mimir was sent to the Vanir as a hostage during the war between the two tribes who proceeded to decapitate him (this was pre-Geneva Convention). Odin discovered Mimir's head seperated from his body and managed to preserve it by embalming it in herbs and kept him for his wisdom and counsel. Mimir could be found at his well named after himself beneath the roots of Yggdrasil, drinking from it with Gjallarhorn would grant one immense knowledge. His name is thought to be linked to our modern word "memory".
