Description
God of war, law and justice, Tyr is a very old god and may have actually been the head of the pantheon in it's older Germanic prototype version, in his Norse form he is member of the Aesir and likely Odin's son. He embodies courage and self-sacrifice in his most famous myth involving him losing his hand. Odin had learnt the wolf offspring of Loki Fenrir would play a pivotal role in Ragnarok and he and the gods had also noticed Fenrir was growing uncontrollably larger by each moment, they knew they would need to bind him. Under the pretense of playing a game Tyr would continually try to tie Fenrir up only for the wolf break them each time. The gods commissioned the dwarves of Svartalfheim to craft them an extra strong set of magic bonds called Gleipnir. Tyr approached Fenrir with Gleipnir but by this time he had grown suspicious and refused any more of this "game", Tyr offered his hand to gain Fenrir's trust and upon realizing he could not break free this time bit off Tyr's hand. Tyr's bad luck with canines doesn't end there as he is foretold to die during Ragnarok fighting another monstrous dog Garmr. But, on the bright side, he got Tuesday (Tyr's Day) named for him.
His symbol is the spear shaped Tīwaz rune named for him.
