North American B-25 "Mitchell" is the aircraft, one of the best medium bombers/fighter bomber built. Used on the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in 1942.Β
Β Β
It had a modification done to it that was especially useful in the Pacific. Β At first, they removed the bombardiers position and closed over the windows, and Β fitted four.50 cal machine guns in the nose, and they were great for strafing Japanese troops. In the final version, a 75mm tank gun was fitted as well, as it was necessary to use it to bust up Japanese shipping convoys and other ground targets. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-25_Mitβ¦
Essentially, it was the grandfather of today's A-10 Warthog, able to fly slow enough to stay on target.  The Warthog is much more advanced with computer targeting, a "cage" with the strength and armor of a tank to protect the pilot and a heavy caliber automatic cannon firing depleted uranium rounds plus massive bomb capacity.  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A10_Wart⦠ The Warthog also owes some of its lineage to the P-47 Thunderbolt, which was designed to combat enemy aircraft, but later in WW2 became a Tacitical Air Support "Tank buster."
In Korea the Navy and later in Vietnam, the Air Force and the Navy used the prop-driven Douglas AD1 Skyraider, which was designed during WW2 but was too late for combat against Japan. Β The AD1 had a terrific capacity for bombs, rockets and machine gun packs. Β With its relatively slow cruising speed and heavy weaponry it was perfect for CAS (close air support) of ground forces and offensive attacks on enemy positions. Β It also worked closely with Navy Seahorse Air/Sea rescue helicopters to lay down a curtain of fire before going in to rescue downed airmen. Many a Phantom or Crusader pilot shot down by SAM missiles owed their lives to this big bird they called "Spad" or "Sandy" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglassβ¦
