The reason is that it's general: when you draw specific characters, they require the audience to understand the context to fully appreciate its beauty. When you draw general stuff - like "Basilisk" or "Dragon" or "Flower Girl" - you allow the subject to be appreciated for what it is.
Good art, like good writing, is basically the work of clearly communicating a concept, and doing so in a way that is aesthetically beautiful. Art that's easily appreciated is therefore art that fully encompasses its subject concept and requires little further explanation.
The final component of truly excellent art is that it's unique or original, thus standing out from the crowd. Combine these three elements - clarity of communication of the subject, beautiful execution and distinctive idea - and you'll rocket to fame.
