Ah geeze, I know that feel so hard.
I've kind of managed to work past that a little, but it's better when it's over Skype or if they come to me. It's a little less... Straining, I guess???

If you get the chance, Monty Python and Red Dwarf are both really fun and silly British humor serials. Monty Python is more episodic and disjointed, there's no overarching plot involved but that's what makes it fun. Red Dwarf is more plot based, with day to day life in a sci fi setting that continued to make me giggle about it just thinking about it.
Like, where else can a hologram go back in time and blow up Nazis and then survive a plane exploding by riding down to earth on an alligator?
I'm not even kidding, the Ace Rimmer episodes were BONKERS.

But yeah, there should be versions with subtitles out by now too, so if you want to explore the silliness, I highly recommend them for the sheer ludicrousness.

I'm really bad at remembering to practice stuff, especially on only my own motivation. It's one of the reasons I did so well in school, I felt a great deal more motivation when I had people expecting stuff of me, and now I'm all... Bleagh.

It's funny, I never realized just how bonkers American English is as a language until I started learning German. German just makes SO much more SENSE. There's no double standards or adopted words, colloquialisms still exist but actually fit in with the rest of the language?!
American English, so freaking WEIRD.

Hahahahahaaa I can feel you there.
Like, in America, everyone technically speaks English, but HOOOOOO BOY. REGIONAL ACCENTS AND COLLOQUIALISMS ABOUND.
Fuckin' Y'ALL'D'VE. It's a legitimate conjugation in the Deep South meaning "you all would have" but-
Y'ALL'D'VE.
Can't get any more Deep South, my GOD.

As a native of the Pacific NorthWest, I have what's called the PNW Non-Accent, I have no idea why the heck it's called that but it's a thing in Washington and the upper half of Oregon. The lower half of Oregon and most of California have a more distinctive accent, but there's also really key niche accents like the Brooklyn accent from Brooklyn, New York.
It's a little... Nuts, honestly.

In all honesty, English is such a weird jumble of a language I have moments where I legitimately wonder that it's even a functional means of communication. ESPECIALLY American English. There's so many phrases and colloquialisms that are borrowed from other languages, mixes of terms that end up being adopted from whatever native peoples happened to be in the area when colonized.
Like, everyone knows Seattle, but did you know there's cities in Washington state like Puyallup (pea-u-all-up) and Humptulips? And I'm not kidding, there's a literal town called HUMPTULIPS. Just- how did this end up a common thing in the Pacific NotherWest? I have no idea, but it is.

True, no culture lives in a vacuum. I think what gets me more than anything with American English is that depending on the location within the States, different languages get vocabulary borrowed. Like how in the Louisiana and nearby area have Creole populations that speak a dialect of French.
