cause she's extremely nice to him in Paper Mario 2...
and cries kinda when she teaches you the last power up...
Toadette: "Mario, This is the last time I'll see you in the whole game!"
(walks off) (turns around to see him one last time)
Toadette: (sniff!)

I love Toadette. I thought she had a "thing" for Mario, too. I think the true tragedy of this story is her love; hopelessly from afar, she can only live vicariously through Peach.
