i copied the same photo 3 times, rotated each layers 90 degrees from the previous one, and used the 'difference' transparency mode on the layers. that's it, i think.

well, by now it is no longer an experiment (as a method). i try it on most of my photos. i have sort of learnt to recognize photos that won't work with it, but i can never predict the the results with suitable photos - i am astounded every time something turns out well.
