So I realized that in all my art, that portraits aside, I have a tendency to neglect faces and whatnot. I was looking at a lot of different artists like Lori Earley and it occurred to me that I never gave an effort towards stylizing the face, nor had I ever gone out on a limb and tried to produce exaggerated features. So I decided to give it a try and OMG IT'S SO MUCH FUN WHY DID I NEVER TRY IT BEFORE????
I'm always focused on concepts and outfits and patterns, I tend to draw a lot of really blank expressionless faces.

This is really only the first time I've ever experimented trying something like this, it was a lot of fun and I did it really quickly so all in all I'm quite happy with the results.

I'm sort of on the fence about asking for critiques because I know that I've built up a pretty solid group of watchers who are really interested in seeing much of the style I've consistently created before, and this deviates from what you guys expect from me.
On top of this, since this kind of caricaturist style is new to me, I don't know how much I'll stick to it as I go.
Not to mention; I spat this one out pretty quickly, I hate getting redundant critiques that rub in things I already know.
So yes...I guess if there are any useful thoughts out there that don't reiterate the things mentioned above, I'd like to hear them.

I really do love your style that you have taken upon for faces. They're very unique, even if they seem blank they have a hint of mystery which keeps them interesting. Again, I love those roses. You perfect them!

I like it very much, and experimentation is good indeed to try now and again...the eyes are very expressive, and interesting to look at...kind of darkly playful, maybe. The shape of her face and features is also very interesting, angular in a good way. She looks like a twenties flapper lass as the subject of a haunted house painting lol....which is a very good thing, as far as I am concerned.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like it, and I was definitely going for the twenties look so I'm happy you saw that ^__^

Hey this is pretty cool! I don't really know what kind of thoughts I can give other than I think the more you experiment and explore with it, you'll stumble upon new techniques and such. All my cartoony crap is actually shifting towards a more bland style - especially their faces!! So it's kind of the reverse heh but that's beside the point. I'm excited to see what else you do with this kind of look

Thankies Ed!!!!! yeah i feel like i went from cartoony to realistic to stylized again...it's like a cycle i guess!

i would have made her jaw/chin area a little wider / more rounded, particularly at the bottom~left

love the eyes and the hair and the fox stole and.. : P

LucitaniaMarie In reply to prophezeiung [2009-05-03 05:02:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...while I really like the whole big eyes tiny mouth/chin effect, I have to work on it a little more so it doesn't just look like she has a weak chin. I think with a little more practice I'll figure out a more effective and "natural" looking effect here.
and thankies ^__^

my eyes get sucked in it. I really love this style, the eyes, the gray nuances, the lips, the hair[...]but I'm just thinking that maybe you'll have problems to put these details if you draw the entire body with it, I mean you may have not enough space. Anyway, I don't think what I said was useful ^^'. You have a great style, there's always something in your drawings that is special, with or without expressing faces. I'm waiting for the next ones [so bad english o_รต]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

LucitaniaMarie In reply to albe60 [2009-05-02 17:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I see what you mean, I'm not sure if I'd put the same amount of detail in with the outfits/bodies as I do with the face. I've never been as good with background things anyway, I think I'll just have to not get to sucked in with that or I'll end up spending forever on the bodies and not be happy about it. Thanks, and yes it was useful, and your english is fine! ^__^

You know, I have this exact same problem too. My faces have no individual style and always look tired, expressionless and lack a sense of being alive..

After seeing this though and reading what you wrote - I'm gonna launch into this today! This is such a great drawing.. she has all the features I love. A button nose, going into a wide nose bridge and forehead and really strong, smooth cheekbones. I really like how you defined her lips and highlighted her cheekbones. This portrait really reminds me of this artist's work: [link] you might like her

As for changing your work and style. If you feel this is where the next natural step is, then I say go for it. You shouldn't let what we think stop you. Experimentation and growth is vital. I actually really like this heavy change. I've followed some artists for years and they can get stuck in a way of doing things that gets tired. Tired for me as a seasoned fan, but exciting for someone new to their work. People and fans come and go. You can't please everyone. Art is ultimately nourishment for the soul, so aim only to please yourself

(i'll still be around to have a look in!)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooh yes I really really like that artist!!!
And thank you thank you thank you!
Thanks for the tips too, although I care about giving people something nice to look at, I'd sort of decided to already go where ever my heart led me as far as changing like this. I just know how this website works, and I know that sometimes when an artist changes people give them crap. Luckily I can say that a lot of my watchers don't seem to be the type to write obnoxious comments or have a sense of entitlement to my work. It's nice to have intelligent and open minded watchers like yourself!
I'm glad you're supportive, thanks for the words ^__^
