Ahh, my new baby is finally up! I needed to finish his basic reference for an upcoming tournament, so his full reference and profile are not quite done, but Im working on it--really I am! A lot of his backstory and personality are actually based on...well, me. I was the quiet kid who didnt talk to people in school.

I have wanted to make an owl character forever, but i just couldnt get over how oversized the beaks are on Sonic bird characters, though there are some great artists out there that still make amazing bird characters even with the oversized beak issue. Another issue was how wings and flight work in the sonic world--maybe you've noticed, but none of the canon game bird characters can fly, but somehow a fox and a rabbit can fly. Well, Wave flies but her hover board is actually the thing that does the flying, and apparently that counts, but I want my bird characters to be able to fly naturally.

There was a few options to go with but i decided that i didnt have to choose if i just include in my AU that there are different evolutionary branches for certain groups. This means in my AU some birds have wings as seperate limbs, Like Rouge, and some have arms that double as wings, Breath of the Wild Rito style. Im not sure about having birds that can retract and unretract their wings from their bodies--maybe I'll make a poll for that.

So for my first official Avian fc, i went with Rito style wings. But i didnt want to call it that on his profile so i called his type chiropteric avian(bird) mobians. Chiroptera is the classification for bats, but since the word literally means "hand-wings", i figured i could still apply it here. I decided its an older type of evolution that has become less common over the centuries. And sometimes it causes young chiropteric bird mobians to have to endure some prejudicial treatment.

And thats kind of what happened to Night. On his first day of school, all the kids in his class, and even the teacher, made a big deal about how different he was from the other little birdie kids. It wasnt malicious, but being treated like an object of curiosity so openly made him so self conscious that after that day, he rarely talked unless directly addressed. He just didnt want to draw attention to himself, because now he knew he was different, and he knew why. The other fliers had wings AND arms and he didnt have that, he had some strange mashed up combination that made his arms(wings) look way too long. He also had to deal with some difficulties brought on by anatomy, such as needing to have his arms(wings) free of any clothing in order to use them for flying. You cant see it in this reference, but his Legend of Zelda shirt has torn off sleeves. But when he flies, that means he no longer has free hands and arms to use. Instead he has very prehensile feet and retractable talons that function like fingers for grabbing, but again, that means he has to take off his shoes to use his feet, so as you can imagine, he didnt fly at all when he was in school. He didnt want the kids to make a big deal about his differences again--the first time was traumatic enough with all these rude kids poking and grabbing and pulling his arms/wings.

And that is just a little piece of his backstory. Basically Night runs away from home after finding out a particularly upsetting discovery concerning his parents. But there was a lot of things weighing heavy on him at the time, finding out his parents were untrustworthy backstabbers was just the last straw, so his runaway plan was actually spur of the moment. And he had to convince himself not to go back, because he didnt really fit in anywhere anyway. Maybe this was what he really needed. Maybe this was a chance for something more. Night was also lonely and, even though he told himself he could do without it, because he had for most of his life, he was secretly hoping that maybe he could find a real friend someday.

This is the short version of his backstory, there's quite a bit cut out. I like to think that Night is a smart kid, but his hasty decision was spurred on by a lot of heavy feelings that he felt no one appreciated or cared about. And rather than see his actions as a mistake, he decided to see it as an opportunity to go experience things on his own. Especially that he loves to read and write and wants to be a writer, so this would give him real actual experience for that. He eventually does call home to let his parents know he was okay, but he wasnt ready to come back.

And so Night was now like a lot of kids in this great, big world--running loose before adulthood and having strange, crazy adventures.

Personality: A lot was shaped by his childhood experiences. He was a shy kid who didnt talk to people, and he got a better handle on the shyness later on as he grew older but he still didnt talk to people. He was now what you call introverted. Since he is so quiet, it often surprises people that he can speak so well, and so eloquently, due to many years of reading and writing. He's very into his hobbies, video games, writing stories, making characters, and reading books. Most of these are more of a passion, but they were all a lifeline for him, because these kept him busy for years in loo of having friends to hang out with.
