Yamato (Matt in dub) was actually going to be the Digimon Kaiser (Digimon Emperor in dub). In an idea they had before going with 02.
They were actually going to continue with the first ones. But instead they went with 02.
So you picture has some sense.

Yeah, in many different ways, but it's still a little different. I like watching the anime for it.
(Although I like the creatures from pokemon more then the digimon, but digimon's concept is cool.
