Description EDIT: A'RIGHT, TIME TO UPDATE THIS OC, TOO. ABOUT TIME.

Country Name: Greenland / Kalaallit Nunaat
Human Name: Qorsuk Suersaq
Status: Autonomous Country
Capital: Nuuk (Godthåb)
Location: North America
Gender: Male
Languages: Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic), Danish, English
Physical Age: 19
Birthday: June 21
Height: 176 cm. - 5'9" in.
Religion: Evangelical Lutheran

Appearance
Greenland has rather messy, short, black hair (Representing Gunnbjørn Fjeld). His skin is a little dark like his Inuit population. He wears a heavy green jacket with a hood, as the temperatures in his country can go very far below zero. Red mittens keep his hands warm, and a pair of sturdy, brown boots with red straps help him walk along the ice without slipping.

Personality and Interests
The autonomous nation of Greenland loves the ice, and prefers to stick to it. He is generally a very cheery person, to contrast against the cold of the ice, since his people are known to be friendly towards travelers. Not much can get him down. He has a bit of a childish streak, shown with Ikinngut, a plush Greenlandic Shark. It is the representation of the bountiful marine life around Greenland.

Greenland loves to fish and hunt, having done it for centuries. It is true he hunts seals, but does so without harpoons in modern day, using rifles instead. He is very faithful to Denmark, although has wanted to become independent for a little while now. (However, Denmark thinks that can't happen until his economy improves; it's quite vulnerable.) In his time under the custody of America during World War II, he has learned much from the nation with a hero-complex, and has even adopted some of interests, even getting new technology from him, which he loves as well. He can balance modern and traditional values quite well.

History
Greenland was first inhabited by unknown peoples in 2500 BC, who died out later and were replaced. Since the first settlers were unknown, Greenland has no known blood-related family. This cycle of different cultures of Paleo-Eskimo origin repeats, and the first established culture is the Saqqaq culture, which came around 2500 BC but declined in 800 BC. This culture coexisted with the Independence I & II cultures, which came in 2400 BC but I died out in 1300 BC while II went on to become the "Greenlandic Dorset" culture in 700 BC. The culture then died out in 200 AD, and Greenland himself disappeared until the island became inhabited again by the Late Dorset culture around 800 AD who again died out in 1300 AD.

The Norse vikings arrived in 980 AD when Gunnbjörn Ulfsson was blown off course on a voyage from Norway to Iceland. Voyagers from the countries came to settle in in the 10th century, and an Icelander named Erik the Red had originally given the name Greenland. Greenland, with the Dorset culture in the far north, hid from the new settlers.

In 1126, a diocese was founded at Garðar (Present day Igaliku). Then in 1261, the Norse settlers on Greenland accepted the rule of the Norwegian king. By the time Norway formed a union with Denmark, the Norse settlements began to decline in the 14th century. This is because in the 12th century, the Inuit and Greenland finally came into contact with Norse settlers- and didn't take well to their presence. The Inuit and Greenland acted hostile towards the Norse settlers, and in 1350, the Inuit settlements had grown closer to the Western Norse settlement, and they abandoned it because the Inuit hunted their livestock. The Inuit had thrived in the cold while the Norse did not. The two cultures could not connect in trade interests, and unable to adapt to freezing temperatures, the Norse finally abandoned their settlements once and for all.

Greenland was then forgotten about by Norway and Denmark for a short period. Records of Greenland were moved from Trondheim to Copenhagen in 1664, where his records were presumably burned in the Copenhagen Fire of 1728.

However in 1721, King Frederick IV of Denmark ordered Lutheran minister Hans Egede and his Bergen Greenland Company to spread the Reformation to the Norse colonies on Greenland. This is because they never knew they were abandoned, and thought the Norse settlements were still Catholic or reverted to Paganism. They found no survivors, and instead went on a mission to spread the Reformation to the Inuit and Greenland. Denmark's words were better heard by Greenland than Norway's when the Norse had come into contact with him, and the two got along well (The start of when Greenland started looking up to Denmark as a sort of older brother). The first child converts were then baptized in 1724.

Unfortunately, the new Danish settlers were ravaged by scurvy and the Dutch attacked and burned a whaling station in Nipisut. The Bergen Company then went bankrupt in 1727. Denmark had attempted to build a fortress and established Good Hope (Godthåb), but this failed too when the crew brought with started a mutiny. The action was recalled in 1730.

Later in 1733, Moravian missionaries under control of Matthias Starch arrived from Denmark. He arrived bringing smallpox from Denmark however, and Greenland and his native peoples fell sick from this for a while. Many of the population died over the next few years.

Trade was then properly established with the Inuit in Greenland by the Danish General Trade Company, and many new towns that still exist today were established because of this period of good trade, starting in 1734. A total of 13 new towns had been established in Greenland from 1724-1774 because of this flourishing trade, such as modern day
Qasigiannguit and Qaqortoq. The GTC was then replaced by the Royal Greenland Trade Department.

When Denmark gave up Norway to Sweden in 1814 under the Treaty of Kiel, control of Greenland fell completely under Denmark, as did Iceland. Strangely during this time, treatment of the Danish colonies worsened tenfold. (Denmark was pretty devastated by his loss of Norway.) The RGTD then was replaced by the Ministry of the Interior and Health (Denmark).

When Denmark claimed Greenland as a whole as his territory in 1919, the then independent Norway protested by claiming Erik the Red's Land (Eastern Greenland) through raising his flag in the area. He then claimed that the area was under terra nullius: The area had no permanent inhabitants and the area was used by Norwegian whalers and trappers. The Permanent Court of International Justice ruled against this in 1933, granting full control of Greenland of Denmark.

During World War II, when Denmark had fallen to German forces in 1940, connections between Denmark and Greenland were severed. Greenland was very upset about this, and dislikes Germany to a certain extent because of this. He was placed under American custody and took orders from him instead because of a treaty signed by Denmark in 1941.

Greenland coped under America's authority, enjoying a degree of independence and did well with exports of cryolite. Thule Air Base was later established after the end of the war, and new pieces of technology were introduced to Greenland through America, and supplies were given by the US and Canada.

After Greenland was returned to Danish control, America noted his location had strategic importance during the Cold War, and offered to buy Greenland from Denmark for $100,000,000 in 1946, but Denmark refused to sell.

The Thule Air Base was made a permanent airbase, but in 1953, some Inuit families had been told to move their homes for expansion of the base, which caused a little bit of friction between Greenland and Denmark. Tension increased until finally something rather adverse happened: January 21, 1968, a B-52 Stratofortress with four hydrogen bombs as cargo crashed near the base, contaminating the area with radioactive debris.

The contaminated was soon cleaned up, but Greenland questioned as to why it happened, and a Danish parliamentary scandal was later uncovered in 1995; it was dubbed Thulegate. Nuclear weapons were routinely within Greenlandic airspace in the years leading up to the accident, despite the nation's official nuclear-free policy.

In 1953, Greenland's colony status was raised to an autonomous province of the Danish Realm. Greenland was also given a nominal voice in the Danish parliament, Folketing. Denmark began a large amount of changes that were created to further urbanize Greenland, and to help make him less dependent on then dwindling seal populations. He also created jobs for workers in then booming cod fisheries. He also resolved to provide improved social services.

These well-meant reforms have created some problems in certain areas, such as modern unemployment and the infamous Blok P housing project. The doors in the modern-European apartment house were too small for Inuit to fit through with their bulky outdoor wear, and fishing tools often blocked fire exits because of the cramped apartments.

In 1982, the first television broadcasts reached Greenland. In the 1980's and 1990's, the fisheries and mines collapsed, dealing a huge blow to Greenland's economy, who remained sick with a bad cold for a while. Since then, he'd been relying on Denmark's aid and cold-water shrimp exports.

Since Greenland had only a small voice in Danish parliament, he was pulled into the European Common Market with Denmark despite his wishes not to in 1973. He feared others would overfish his waters, and that became true, so he pushed Denmark for further independence, and home rule was granted in 1979.

To this day, while still looking up to Denmark, he pushes for further independence, although his poor economy gets in the way of a definite answer.

Other Facts
- Greenland experiences the Arctic Summer, and is usually grumpy throughout it because the sun never sets for a few months.

- The words kayak, igloo, and anorak were originally Greenlandic words adopted into other languages, including English.

- He spends half his time inside with the frivolous technologies such as computers, and half his time outside being active, but during July, which is the only month the temperatures go above zero, he mostly spends time outside. He makes the most of the warmer temperatures.

- 98% of the Greenlandic population uses advanced digital telecommunication devices. In other words, lots of satellites and the like, uses the internet, watches TV, and spends time on a cell phone. Think your average teenager with him.

- In Greenlandic, the counting system has a base of 20, as opposed to most other languages who have a counting base of 10. This is because the Inuit count all of their fingers and toes.

- Greenland has a 100% literacy rate, all of his population can read and write!
