I am a big fan of the atmosphere of the Silent Hill series. One thing I think Resident Evil though beats it at is an actual fear of getting into fights. Whenever I play a SH game I start out really on edge and afraid of the monsters but then the gameplay of fighting slowly comes to the surface and I just realize I can kill pretty much anything with out too much of a fuss.So Silent Hill wins in the freak out department but Resident Evil plays better.

That pic is really good! Both RE and Silent Hill (especially SH1 and 3) are awesome series. Both are very different survival horror games, but each awesome in what they do.

Yeah, I feel like I shouldn't compare certain games too much and just let them stand alone. i.e.I think it's silly when people were comparing Gears of War to Halo, yeah they are both shooters but with incredibly different feels.
Also RE and SH seem to be evolving into different beasts.

I have yet to play the newest one. With all likelihood I will play RE5 before I get around to it.
