Description My dear follower,
today I would like to talk to you about a subject that matters to me a lot: art theft.
First let's talk about fan art:
Fan art is an artwork made from scratch that portrait a licenced character. This is not illegal and the artist owns the rights to his artwork although he does not own the rights to the character. Fan art is also protected through copyright.
Now what is art theft? Art theft is when someone copies an artwork made by someone else or use it without permission or without giving credit to make prints, shirts or pins. Taking someones photos without giving credit is also theft.
Recently I saw a lot of art theft happening especially in the fantasypins community which really was bothering me.Β  People were using artwork from Deviantart and other art websites without having the permission. That's why I'm reaching out to call your attention to this matter.
Please don't steal art!!! Stealing someone elses art is a rotten thing to do. The artist puts hours of work and dedication to create his art.
I saw some people bring forward the argument that it is ok to steal art, because the artists stole as well by using licenced characters (e.g. Disney). This is so wrong!!! As I wrote above, fan art is not stealing and the artist owns the rights to his artwork.
So please, don't ever steal art!!! Show respect to the artist! If you admire some artwork, support the artist and don't steal from him. If you see art theft, don't buy it!!! Don't support thieves! Inform the artist if you see someone using art which belong to someone else.
It is a subject of ethics and decency. I am specially reaching out to pindesigner . If you find art on google that you want to be a pin, make a research, find the artist and ask for permission. Many artists would love to cooperate.
Thank you for reading this, it really is a heartfelt wish πŸ’–

I had one person use something of mine without permission (I think it was a photo)

They were like: Well, people do it to me all the time.

It's just unacceptable, that's it.

Incredible what excuses people use to justify their shabby acting!

I just realized something - I've been seeing a lot of these fantasy pins show up on eBay, and I bought one that resembles this piece:

I now realize that you're right, this piece was probably not made by the artist.Β  I love the image, especially because Ariel's in the dress, but now that I think about it, buying the pin was probably not the best idea.Β

Oddly, the pin was well made, but I wonder.Β  I think the original image was lineart, possibly from but I can't confirm this from their gallery alone.
Now I'm real curious where the pin came from.

It's chilling, thinking about how many artists are losing their work like this.Β  (I have also seen my own art stolen, and I'm not even an artist.)

I have seen the pin as well and didn't even know it was based on artwork from someone here as well. It's obvious that the pin was made with the artwork of this artist. The question is, if it was made with permission or if it was stolen. The best way is to just ask the artist So, if I were you, I would contact the artist and send them a photo of the pin. Than you'll know

True words are spoken right here!
Movies have official concept art. Those who create the art, aren't usually the ones who designed/created the characters of the movie. Now, if fan-art is considered to be stealing, are the official movie concept art creators stealing? Same goes for games. What I know, usually the artists work for the dev teams. If concept art was also considered to be theft, I highly doubt there would be any concept art at the moment.

As long as it is non profit and you are only showcasing your work, it is not illegal to use characters from animated features. There is still the freedom of art. An artist draws what he sees.... no one can take this away Β
