"Why art thou so sad, Twilight Sparkle?"

Twilight jumped at the sound of her name. She had been studying the perfectly carved banisters of the balcony for the better part of the last hour. She glanced over her shoulder, forcing a smile, "Princess Luna, what are you doing out here?"

"Just Luna, please," the night blue mare said, her hooves clattering against the marble floor as she neared Twilight, "It is time to raise the moon."

"Already?" Twilight asked, unable to keep the surprise from her voice. A glance skyward confirmed her question. The sun was already dripping low on the horizon.

Luna’s horn glowed a pale blue as she guided the moon down above. As she worked, she glanced back to Twilight, "My question still remains."

"Ah," Twilight said softly, her forehoof scrapping the ground below, "I just…" She trailed off, peeking at Luna from beneath her bangs. She found the teal eyes filled with sympathy. She heard herself say, in a rush, "I never asked for this."

A moment of silence followed as Luna drew the moon to the center of the sky. The glow around her horn faded as she nodded to Twilight, "Yes, I know. I will not lie to you, Twilight Sparkle, being a princess is not always as fun as our subjects believe. It is hard work and sometimes thankless," She paused to choose her words carefully, "My sister sometimes acts without consideration if she believes her choices are for the better of her realm. She doesn’t do this with malice, but with love. Love for her country, love for her people…and love for you as well. She felt this would be the ultimate gift for your sacrifices and heroics, so she did not ask if this was what you wanted.It is one of my sister’s few vices."

"Believe me, I truly appreciate it," Twilight said quickly, "I’m honored to serve…I just don’t know the first thing about being a princess!"

A small smile flitted over the features of Luna, "Let me tell you a secret. Nor do I. I’m still learning, Twilight, as so is Celestia. Wisdom comes with age and time and from now on, you’ll have a lot of that."

Twilight nodded, unsure of what to say now. Anxiety still squirmed in the pit of her stomach but talking with Luna and hearing her say that she too did not have all the answers was oddly assuring. Something else tugged at the back of her mind so she asked, "What is Princess Celestia’s other vice?"

Luna simply smiled and said, "Cake."
