It' should be noted that canonly Nightmare Moon is a possessed form of Luna, that she had slowly allowed herself to be taken over by a dark force or power. I would like to think of it as the symbiote from Spiderman or that Luna had created or found a 'friend' that manipulated her.

As someone said before me, this IS creepy but in a good way! Everyone has had their speculation on how Luna transformed and after seeing this version, I actually like this, even though I still think that Luna and Celestia are technically the same age (at least back then) and they're twins to go along side how they ruled day and night (With Celestia being the first twin and Luna being the second)
The way she replies to her sister speaks of what she was feeling; she was ignored even though her duties were of the same importance as Celestia and never noticed in the process. To give a little sarcastic tone to Celestia about finally noticing speaks of this.

I agree that Luna very likely didn't turn psychotic in a day. Adopting her new persona I can see happened after feeding off her own anger at apparently being ignored by the ponies she was supposedly supposed to be ruling for half the day. Not to mention she'd have to get to where she ignored all the nocturnal life in existence.
I've had the strange image for a while that Luna after seeing Celestia present some of her creations to their subjects, as a spur of the moment decision made some mice into the first bats thinking the ponies would love them too, only for everyone to shriek at them.

Well, the transformation probably wasn't sudden. I could also see how Princess Celestia might have become wrapped up in ruling Equestria. Running a country can be very taxing, and she might have worked herself to exhaustion every night to do it. It would be plausible that Princess Luna felt isolated. It could also be that Princess Luna kept her feelings to herself, and the feelings grew stronger, and festered in to the hatred that became Nightmare Moon. I know that some people can be like that, and the people around them would never notice a change in the slightest. This could have happened the same way. I can actually see that, in a way, in you piece.
It might be the reason why they were so happy to be back together at the end of episode 2.
