Description my 2x6 c&c guinea pig cage. Home to Spike and Wilbur!

Pet store cages are actually too small for guinea pigs! They thrive on a LOT of floor space and most pet store cages are considered downright cruelty for pigs, especially since they are so small the pig has no choice but to lay in it's own waste. That's like living in a small bathroom with the toilet flooded!!

The (bare) minumum size requirement for two pigs is 7.5 square feet, preferably at least 10 square feet (a 2x4 c&c cage) but the bigger the better!! That rings especially true for my boys who just started living together in January. They very much need their personal space!

For information on how affordable and beneficial these cages are and how to build one, visit www.guineapigcages.com

Regarding fleece, I was wondering how to prepare/maintain the fleece. I am wanting to switch from the regular bedding to fleece, that will be on top of newspaper layers. Help?

this is just what i do, but there are several ways to do it. First, I lay down a good layer of newspaper, then a old towel, then the fleece blanket. I wash the blanket and towel once a week, but you do need to brush poop and fur off the blanket daily. The smaller the cage, the harder it is to keep up with the cleaning. Also, sometimes if the fleece is thin they get under it and chew up the newpaper/get the base of the cage dirty. I hope this helps.

Cute! I love the cow print fleece! I used to have guinea pigs, but made a bad choice and got them from a pet store. They were terrified of me, so I had to get rid of them. I want to get some from a breeder this time around.

Love your cage ;u; Those must be some happy piggies Im in the UK and i've found it almost impossible to find grids here and coroplast I've had trouble finding too, my pigs are in a makeshift cage around the size of a 2x5 C&C c: We have a thick groundmat for the floor which attatches about 4 inches up the side, so bedding doesnt get kicked out and the walls are the sides of my old run c: They've been in there around a year nao Noticable difference, they're so much more social when you give them space ^-^ I wake up every morning to two piggies standing up on the side of their cage wheeking for veggies x3 <3

Well as long as it's big enough lol, the grids just make it super easy My pigs like each other a lot now but I think they would go nuts with each other in a smaller cage XD Like roommates-they sure like their space! Especially since Spike is SOOOO clingy, he's a 'velcro' pig!

Luna-Ortis In reply to Quitedeath [2011-06-13 05:47:02 +0000 UTC]

You can get them at hardware stores, grocery stores that sell home decor/storage, home deco stores, wal mart, etc etc. They are build-it-yourself storage grids so anywhere that has a decent storage section! Near me, walmart and superstore (canadian) are the cheapest places to get them.

Mine is 6x2 right now but 2x3 is the bare minimum for 2 piggies. The bigger the better though! I think my guys would go crazy sharing a 2x3 XD

Quitedeath In reply to Luna-Ortis [2011-06-14 02:02:14 +0000 UTC]

lol I'm only getting one
So what do you use as the bedding i saw many with a fleece blanket and think thats better then a the bedding i used

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Luna-Ortis In reply to Quitedeath [2011-06-14 05:07:58 +0000 UTC]

I HIGHLY recommend getting two. I always say get two or none at all. It's just very cruel to keep a herd animal singularly. Of course there are very rare exceptions, like a pig who has failed many introductions, but if there's nothing socially wrong with the pig, get two. They're also more fun in pairs

I really like fleece as bedding. It smells less, stays nice and dry, is reusable, etc. With a cage as big as a guinea pig needs it's really economical. I use u-haul blankets underneath because they are more absorbent than towels and lock in odors.

Show this to them [link]

You can probably find a lot of other links about the topic too. I feel your pain about parents lol XD They can be so stubborn. Try Youtube vids with pigs being social too. Or remind them about how your girls got along, cuddled or talked to each other, etc.

If you get two strange pigs you will have to introduce them and not all pigs will get along. MUCH easier if both are babies. Pigs get along based on personality mostly. If you can find two pigs that are already a pair, I recommend going that route. I know my parents wouldn't do anything pet wise if it wasn't easy

Luna-Ortis In reply to kawaii-japan-fan [2011-06-02 23:18:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes and no. The grid/build it yourself style is great for rabbits but they usually need a closed top and appreciate levels or higher ceilings so they can stand up fully! Google NIC rabbit cages for lots of ideas

I'm in the process of building a C&C for my Bunny Ember. I was Wondering how did you make the Hay Basket and where did you get the cloth on the bottom?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Luna-Ortis In reply to RageofDays [2011-06-01 04:04:17 +0000 UTC]

The hay basket I made from coroplast and bent wire grids. It was my own template and pattern so I can't really ~tell~ you how exactly I made it, you'll have to play around with a design.

The cloth is just fleece! You can get fleece blankies (or throws) from walmart or anywhere else that sells human bedding, or better quality stuff from a fabric store. Underneath I used to use towels but now I use u-haul blankets-they are more absorbent.

AnimeRose [2010-09-01 06:02:13 +0000 UTC]

really nice job on the cage, I have built one myself to its roughly I think a 2x3 or 2x4 I wanted to make it larger but sadly in the space my girls are in there is not a terrible lot of space to do something much bigger, I have been pondering the idea of putting in a second floor to the cage so they could have more room to explore, I figure if I can't make it wider I could possibly make it taller, but too be fair I the size it is really good for the both of them to run around, mostly I keep them fairly active by mixing up their house/igloo toys, changing them differently once a day so they won't just sit in them all day on their butts, and actually run about a bit, and also making sure they get plenty of floor time as well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Luna-Ortis In reply to AnimeRose [2010-09-01 18:39:16 +0000 UTC]

Adding a second level doesn't really count as giving them the necessary floor space since they're ground animals and it's the running/roaming room that counts! If you have 2 girls and a cage that has at least 7.5 square feet or so and they're happy and get play time you should be ok. Adding a second level takes a little bit of floor space away (for the ladder) and it's a pain to clean underneath it!

Nice cage! myself, i have a pet store cage, but it is plenty big. i have seen the cages you're talking about. the little piggies just sit there dejectedly. its very sad harley doesnt lay in his waste. he has picked a bathroom corner and sometimes runs through it if he is jumping up onto his house, but doesnt hang about in there. his cage is actually rabbit or ferret sized, and he's perfectly happy in there. a lot of things for guinea pigs are undersized.... his house is a log dome that is sized for a rabbit and we have a smaller one thats supposedly "guinea pig" sized, but its so tiny! harley is still a baby and we have to make it into a full blown tunnel for him to fit in it! He likes to climb on it but we originally got it to help him reach his hay. he has grown tremendously in the two or three weeks ive had him! also, do you just use the cloth to bed them? i use carefresh, although its pretty expensive and he uses a lot of it (it takes like, half a jumbo bag to adequately fill his cage!) but i want to look into other things, and i think he would like cloth, although im trying to discourage him from chewing it cuz he eats my shirts when im holding him ^^'. anyways, sorry about the really long comment! bye!
