"Papa."

Asterion jerked awake at the mention of his name - well, not his name, no, but his newly obtained title. Though his pup was still very young, his first word had shaken Aster's world to its core.

Papa. His first word was papa.

But he was beyond tired of hearing it by now. Little Orion, ever since he'd opened his eyes, was an anxious, trembling little mess. It was as though the advent of opening his eyes had turned the easygoing little pup, who scarcely reacted to getting one of his siblings' paws shoved up his mouth or his ears pinched in little teething mouths, into a mouse.

Orion was precious to Asterion - all of his children were - but he felt that Orion was demanding more of his time than Orion felt proper. He wanted to give equal attention to all of his pups; Orion was always thrusting himself towards his father to snuggle up against his legs, or hide his head in his chest.

That, and he was always repeating one of three words. Mama. Papa. Sarn.*

"Papa."

Asterion, responding again to his son's plaintive word, twisted his head down to look at the pup between his forelegs. "Yes, Rion?" he yawned, twitching one ear.

Orion didn't have the words to express any of his emotions yet, but Asterion knew, from their interactions since he first opened his eyes, that the pup grew anxious when one of his guardians - didn't have their eyes open for trouble. Nights were hard, but they were making it work. Normally, one parent would need to keep awake whenever Orion was, or he would insist they wake up. He clearly felt vulnerable when his caretakers were asleep.

So, knowing this, Asterion gently nuzzled his son. "It's okay, Orion. Nothing can harm you here. You're safe. You're loved. Okay?"

Orion blinked up with gray eyes - so recently blue, like those of all pups - and murmured, "Kay."

He nestled deeper against Asterion's chest, and Aster turned his bleary gaze towards the den, where Samhradh was getting some well-deserved rest with the rest of the pups settled in for a nap. A nap that Orion never seemed willing or able to take. Asterion touched his nose against Orion's head. "Get some rest. Close your eyes, little one. Dream..."

* "Sarn" was the monosyllabic version of Sarin, one of Orion's brothers. He found Sagitta's name too difficult to pronounce, and Leo - well, the control of his mouth wasn't yet allowing him to pronounce the hard 'o' sound. But soon. Pups developed extremely quickly after their ears and eyes opened.

Okay, so a little insight into my beautiful baby boy and his papa! Here we learn some fun facts: Orion's first word was 'Papa'; Sarin appears to be Orion's favorite sibling at this time; Orion doesn't sleep. Like, at all. He's got some problems.

This is more or less a throwback to my parents' own experiences with me growing up. I was terrified of sleeping as a young child, because I wasn't aware of my surroundings. Actually, I still have problems letting my guard down enough to sleep. But anyway, this is also the case with naps. Which means that Orion's probably going to be an easy grump when he goes too long without sleeping. Asterion's working around things the best he can - seperating the wide-awake pup from his siblings at naptime is the method he's currently trying.
