Description The "blunt-snouted dolphin" is believed to be a close relative of killer whales and lived approximately during the Pliocene-Pleistocene-boundary. Its remains were discovered in the North Sea by Albert Hoekman (after which the species is named), the initial scientific description by Post and Kompanje followed two years after that in 2010. An interesting feature of this peculiar cetacean is a supposed balloon-like structure on its snout, which also gives the animal its informal name.
