Yes the new ones all look the same, they dont seem to bother trying to make them look nice anymore. The Disney ships designers made a good effort though, beautiful hull design but they ruined it by putting a waterpark on top!

I agree. And the Captain of the Costa Concordia, my god what a coward. Captain Smith, Captain Turner and Captain Rostron would be spinning in their graves if they saw how that (so called) Captain behaved. A true Captain goes down with his ship or the last to leave and they help their passengers. Captain Smith went with Titanic to the bottom like an honorable Captain and Captain tried to do the same with Lusitania but he did his best to save lives.

Yes that guy was a fool and should never have been in command of a ship,he caused the accident and tried to run from his ship afterwards. You have to feel sorry for Smith and Turner, they knew there was nothing they could do, Turner tried to beach his ship but the control cables were cut, he did manage to turn her towards shore but it was too far. The rudder on the wreck is still turned to port and the ship did turn enough to reach land if it had more time but no one expected her to go under in only 20 minutes.

indeed even Schwieger did not expect that the ship would even sink. Even he was baffled by the second explosion and Lusitania's rapid sinking.

The tragic irony is when she was Built Lusitania did not have enough lifeboats for all but by the time of her sinking she had more than enough lifeboats for all following Titanic's demise but was unable to launch them all not only because how fast she sank but she listed to her starboard side rendering the port lifeboats useless.

Im sure he would have shot more  torpedoes into her if the ship hadnt sunk right-away, even if he did not think he would sink her ,he knew he was firing a very powerful weapon at a ship full of women and children. One thing that could have saved most of the Lusitania passengers would have been to cut the port side lifeboats free and allow people to swim to them.

That probably would have worked. I blame the British as well for what happened because she had been carrying military cargo but none of it had the kick to cause the second explosion that sank her. On top of that Lusitania was built with funding by the British navy and was listed as a Royal Naval reserve to be turned into a warship. I heard that Lusitania was for a short time taken by the royal navy for military use but they changed their mind and handed her back to Cunard but not before fitting her with gun mounts. I'm not sure if this is true or not.

But regardless by listing her as royal navy reserve and loading her with military cargo the British had effectively painted a target on Lusitania.

Thats true ,she was fitted with gun rings but they were removed and she went back to service with cunard, she was designed from the start to be converted, her hull shape was taken from warship designs and coal bunkers were placed along her sides to absorb impacts from shells and torpedos but these were defensive measures, not offensive.Still when she was attacked she was not a military  vessel and was not going to be used as a warship.Any liner could be converted into a warship in a few days by adding guns so she was no greater threat than any other liner. She carried a tiny amount of arms because there wasnt room for much as her hold was full of luggage for over 2000 people. The transport of arms was more of a token gesture by cunard to show they supported the war but the amount was insignificant.

Yeah I have learned that Lusitania was built for Cunard with funds by the British navy and she could be converted as a Auxiliary cruiser. Giving her size they can fit her with plenty of guns and hide some of them. Most likely though Lusitania had she not been sunk would have taken the same role Olympic, Britannic and her own sisters Mauretania and Aquitania as a troop ship or Hospital ship. But Lusitania could have made a cool Auxiliary cruiser. I had imagined Titanic as a Auxiliary Cruiser. But Titanic was not built for speed but giving her size  I mean she was bigger than Lusitania they could have fitted Titanic with guns as well. Had she not hit that darn Iceberg.

The only of the big liners I know were fitted with Guns was Olympic when she was converted as a troop carrier. Good chance they did the same with Mauretania when she was converted to a troopship and the same for Aquitania even though Aquitania spend a good portion of the war as a Hospital ship. But Hospital ships like Aquitania and Britannic should have been armed giving how some U-boat captains would attack hospital ships and liners as Schwieger had demonstrated when he took out Lusitania.

The navy didnt really want to use Lucy because she used too much coal, They could not afford to use her and Mauretania for war service because coal was scarce in wartime. The big liners were never really used as warships, they just werent built to operate that way,  they made the best use of the speed of the ships by using them as transports as they could run 2 or 3 times faster than u boats which made them almost impossible to catch. Many of them had guns but they were rarely used as the liners best defence was speed and of course ramming u boats worked pretty well too!

I have learned that there were merchant ships fitted with guns called Q-ships. And as you pointed the best weapon Lusitania had to fend off U-boats was her speed and also her bow.

Yes it was very unucky she passed within 300ft of the only sub off the coast of Ireland, if the sub had been even a mile away it could never have caught her, Turners mistake was ignoring navy orders to steer a mid-channel course but he was told the sub was off Fastnet rock and so assumed he had passed the danger area.He got a few confusing orders from the navy which meant he was making decisions on bad information.
