Thank you Β

I collect feathers, not sure why but I have over 150 now :/ mainly common bird feathers Β like pigeons and seagulls but anyway, I wonder what to do with them. I've known about feather painting for a while but figured it would be very difficult because it would separate and generally be more trouble than it might be worth XD but perhaps now I can give it a try.

(why didn't I think of fixative lol? XD What effect does it actually have by the way, other than making it impossible to close separations afterwards? Does it help hold it together by a decent amount or is it just so the paint stays better? Β Thanks)

LuxDani In reply to starling16 [2013-08-29 15:19:02 +0000 UTC]

Definitely give it a try! Its pretty neat once you get the hang of it.
I would say some sort of fixative is an absolute must for feather paintings. It allows the paint to stick to the feathers much better, but it also (my favorite part) stiffens up the feather like mad, so it is a much better surface to work on. Has the same effect of putting way too much hair spray in your hair.

starling16 In reply to LuxDani [2013-08-31 01:31:55 +0000 UTC]

Okay thank you! I have some fixative for pastels- would that do? I can always find another. I'm also guessing it's permanent and I don't need worry of someone washing it off (the paint).

Unfortunately I don't use hair spray so I wouldn't know XP

LuxDani In reply to starling16 [2013-08-31 17:51:41 +0000 UTC]

I think that fixative might work, give it a try.
I find that once the paint goes on the feathers, especially with a fixative, its pretty waterproof. I actually had one of my first painted feathers accidentally soaking in water earlier this year and its totally fine now. You should always give the final painting another coat of the fixative, just to seal it.

All of the feathers in this tutorial are domestic Indian Blue Peacock feathers.

Wow, awesome tutorial, thank you so much! I tried this few times in the past, but never managed very well... DidnΒ΄t know that you could put fixative on it to prevent it breaking, though. Maybe IΒ΄ll try again sometime...

HowlingWolf201 [2010-08-09 02:48:28 +0000 UTC]

this is VERY helpful! thank you, I really hope to use this in the near future!
about the fixative, I have: (as it says on the can) Workable Fixatif (no spelling error), protects pencil, pastel and chalk drawings; prevents smudging and wrinkling; allows easy rework; acid-free/archival-safe
do you think that would work the same?

thanks again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LuxDani In reply to HowlingWolf201 [2010-08-09 14:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Well send me a link if you ever get around to doing some. I'd love to see.

Judging by what it says on the can, it should work fine. To some degree that's what's written on my can as well. If the spray makes the feather nice and stiff, then it should work perfectly fine.

I've never heard of anyone else using chalk to sketch it out, but I thought it made more sense. I always screwed up my paint sketches.
