OMG I LOVE PASTELS <3<3<3Last Saturday, we got two peacocks, a male and a female. One of our relatives own a ton of birds and live in the city. So finally, five years after they first got one of the birds, they told the government about them so they had to get rid of the birds. My dad had peacocks as a kid and wanted to get some again so this was the perfect opportunity.
So we have Vaughn((named after Stevie Ray Vaughn, who has a male peacock tattooed on his chest)) and Eve. We didn't name them, but it could be worse.
And we are babysitting a female mallard duck. Omg she's cute. =3
My mom bought me some velour paper, which is getting hard to find, so I whipped out my pastels and gave them a go. What was more suitable to do at the moment than a peacock? They're colours are so brilliant.

the attention to detail and the different variations of colour are amazing! the background is really nice, too; the impressionistic look you gave it adds to the dynamic feel of the pic- yes, I did say dynamic even though the peacock is standing still lol xD it's like.. the leaves of a bush or something waving in the wind, which in turn brings even more focus to the subject. it's amazing you pulled that off

Peacocks?? O.o Lol the idea seems to strange to me. But of course they are very beautiful indeed so who can complain? My family and I keep chickens and all of my friends find it so bizarre.

I was just browsing through your gallery and I noticed this! I must have missed it in my message center 
You always amaze me with your traditional art skills. It looks so photo realistic and has SO much detail! But what really amazes me is your ability to perfectly capture colour. The feathers really look iridescent and shiny which is super hard to pull off. Your use of blurring to add depth just adds the the awesomeness of the picture-- its simply amazing.

I try to pay very close attention to the colour variation. Nothing bores me more in art than a bland picture with only a few shades.

You should give it a try again. I'd love to see how you do. I can also recommend a great book. Painting Animals That Touch the Heart by Lesley Harrison helped me alot. And she's a great inspiration for wildlife subjects with pastels.

I don't have the book, I've only seen my art teacher with it so I borrowed it. I've never actually seen it in a store before so I'm not actually sure.

They're basically chalk pastels. I don't like to use oils.
The better brands are pricey, but well worth it. I've got a really good set by the name of Rembrant, and for a pack of 12 is was near $50.

the picture, even with its vibrant colors, is made even brighter by your usage of lighting within the picture-- it looks like, from the subject, a perfectly sunny day, with just the right amount of humidity and heat to be a perfect all-around day xD
Its quite pleasing to the eyes, and the detail in the face and feathers makes it much more so.
o_o i marvel at your patience with all that detail
oh oh and the bg has a nice spring-turning-to-summer feel ^_^
