Description HUGE IMAGE AHOY

He's my animal charry. His name is Matlalihuitl (Matt for short), which is aztec language and means "greenish-blue feather". He's a quetzal. :]

The little branch took the longest time.

This was referenced by a photo found on the interwebz. Sorry, can't remember where exactly! But I painted everything on my own.

Too bad these birds are endangered species, wish i'd seen one but i've been told they're hard to find.

Mhh... Really, it's such a shame. I wish to see one of them one day as well, hopefully I'll get the chance. And I hope so for you, too.

mm I like this because it looks pretty realistic...almost like a photo shot through foggy glass. I've never seen a quetzal have his neck in such a position (as stretched out and twisted simultaneously), and that takes away from the realism a bit...but all in all, this is a nice painting.

My friend has an abundant collection of Quetzal photos as he is a photographer for the avitourism board of Guatemala...this almost looks a bit similar to one of his photos

Thank you very much! Perhaps the position of the head is a little off, I'm still trying to get the hang of getting the right eye for anatomy. Thanks for pointing that out, it's really helpful!

That could have even been the one I referenced from! You could tell me his name so I could credit him if you/he would wish, I really want to make sure I'm not hurting any copyrights. I've had the photo saved on my laptop when I went searching for some pictures on Google a while ago and I just couldn't remember where I had it from. Hope I didn't hurt any feelings! ^^"

His name is Jose Yee. I know you can do a google search and it will pop up with quite a few of his photos on the avitourism board, flikr.com, and various other sites. I believe he may even have a few photos here on Deviantart, but I don't know if any are of the quetzals.

Hmm, could you show me the photo of his that looks similar to my painting? I can't seem to find it when I search with his name. I just want to be sure it was his picture I used as my reference.
Thank you for taking the time to clear that up with me. <3

[link] This is his photo stream on flickr...I believe the photo I am thinking of is in this gallery, but can't be sure. I will have to ask him about it when I see him on again lol

I have looked through every page, though, and I didn't find the image that I referenced from... Mine doesn't have one watermark as well, which all of his photos appear to have. Hmm. If you could ask him whenever you see him again, I'd be very grateful. ;D
Thank you a lot, though, for linking me to his flickr! He has got an amazingly impressive collection of great photos. All those detailed quetzal photos! They will be very helpful for my anatomy research! (: I'll make sure that I credit him when I use one specific photo as a reference for future paintings, of course. x]

SofiaERamirez In reply to Luxuna-Shuvana [2010-05-13 22:01:10 +0000 UTC]

No problem. He's had stuff published by NatGeo and, of course, various people have cross posted (or stolen) some of his photos, so the particular photo I am thinking of may not have a watermark or even be in his flickr collections. It is also a possibility that he may not be the photographer of your particular reference photo lol.

Oh, that's what you have with popularity, everything good you have will certainly be stolen in any way. >< Sounds horrible!
Whenever we find this photo, I'll be gladly crediting his name in my artist's comment. (:
