Description This is something I did years ago - around 2002 - when i was first working on doing Venna's Planet in full colour, combining digital painting with photographs and Bryce 5 models. I'm still using the Bryce models for reference, but there's a rough idea of how things were going.Β  I quite like it, but it looks primitive compared to a lot of CGI stuff I've seen on here.Β  The landscape is a combination of photos I had taken of interesting rocks.

I think it may have looked better if you let the rock formation on the left, be in the foreground instead of being in the background. Shown thus, I'd expect a shadow on the ground between the fore and background formations...

Though it's a neat concept.

Well, it's something I pasted together years ago, and I just recently found it, and thought I'd post it here for fun.Β  Maybe if I was doing it today, I'd do it a different way.

Of course. I was just voicing a thought. By the way, are we looking at the front or the back? I'm thinking it's the front, but then I'm not sure.

As the craft doesn't make any aerodynamic sense, I guess it could look like either from this angle.Β  There are some line art versions in the comic strip, Venna's Planet, for which I created this contraption, and that gives a better idea which way they're facing.Β  It is actually the front we're looking at - the back end has a couple of big propulsion units,Β  or maybe they're just exhaust pipes...you can find the strip in its own folder in my gallery, and the ships, or droners, as they're called (they have noisy engines) appear somewhere after the half-way mark.

Aha! Yup, definitely the front after looking at your comic strip. Interesting story. I didn't notice each date, do you post them regularly?

The idea was to complete and post one per day.Β  Ha! Sometimes I go a month or two between postings.Β  I do have the excuse of having a load of other things on, and these taking a long time to prepare, but I'd like to get back on track with it.Β  I want to publish volume one in September.Β

Sometimes I'm Lenny when I should be George, and things don't get done.

Sometimes I'm both Lenny and George and it still seems I'm half a person short. One day at a time, right? All you can do.

That's what I love about dA - we started with an old pasted up piece of sc-fi, and in about five moves, John Steinbeck is with us, via Robert Burns.

It is held aloft by things called 'paragrav rays' - which crop up a lot in the strip - and the engines are powered by something like cooking oil...more about that later in the story.Β  Stay tuned!

I'll have to try to track this down - I know nothing about it beyond a brief Wiki description, and a few pictures.

There is a whacking great dirigible at the end of the story...there might be some pics of it in the gallery.Β  At the rate I'm uploading these, it's not likely we're going to arrive at that sequence before about 2025.

I really like the 'organic' nature of the craft. it's retro, whimsical, and the all curved and plumped features make it feminine-sexy.

Not bad. Not sure how I feel about the monochrome color.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LuxuryGoat In reply to Chickfighter [2015-03-09 21:59:01 +0000 UTC]

That was a last minute decision - but I felt the original colours weren't matched up very well, and made it look too fake. The colours are still there, though, as I only gave it a 75 per cent sepia wash.

Chickfighter In reply to LuxuryGoat [2015-03-09 22:01:21 +0000 UTC]

I thought I detected a subtle difference.

And yes this would probably be better than fake looking color. Unless you're going for a Tim Burton version of course.

I did about 27 pages of this story in full colour, and Tim Burton would have put his sunglasses on!Β  I think less is more sometimes.Β Β  I'm much happier with the line art I've gone back to for this project.

I dabbled in this because it was new to me - I had a few new toys i wanted to play with.Β  Bryce has been useful, though, as I'm pretty much directly copying the models, which, once created, I can view from all angles.
