Description Finally it's done. Another matte-painting (combined with bit of space art). It's not perfect, I know, but I'm slowly learning new techniques. I've changed the idea 3 or 4 times before I started working in photoshop. It's slightly inspired by movie Thor, where you could see the waterfall at the end of Asgard (or whatever it was).

It's supposed to be some kind of floating fort-island beyond the 'edge of the world' with some crazy stuff going on there.

Explanation of the title (quote from Wikipedia):

The term ultima Thule in medieval geographies denotes any distant place located beyond the "borders of the known world"

Hope you like it.

~ few minutes in Vue modelling the raw composition, 2 hours of rendering and 9h 3min of postproduction in PS

// Piece edited. Less contrast background, darker water, lighter island, wider light reflection and changed composition of the island. I believe it looks better know, though not perfect.

// Comments and Critique welcomed. Though I worked in perspective grid and rendered the raw scene, the island still looks sort of floating above the waterfall, even if it's further away. So if anybody has an opinion, how to fix it, I'd love to hear it.

Thank you. Yes, I know the perspective is little off, but so far nobody told me, although they all say it's weird, what'd they do differently. By rock you mean the floating island - the bottom part? I'd be glad if you'd find few seconds to tell me what's making it so confusing. People told me to change the angle, or add some cloads between the waterfall and island.. but it's not 'straight' solution, I wanna keep this angle and don't wanna add more elements to it. I'd really appreaciate your further comment.. if you poit out how to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Hello. You Welcome.
I´ve download your work and opened it in my photoshop, I´ve added shadows in the bottom part of floating island (I was referring this part), the perspective improve, so I think that the botton part is so light. There is a global light that iluminates the scene, but anyway the bottom part should be more dark. You could try to removing this area or convert the area into stone (dark stone). This is OnLy my opionion, i am not a expert, but if I help, I´ll do it. I have ofter wished someone talk me or help but no one done it; so I tell you my opinion.

Thanks! I appreciate your help. It looks better. Funny thing is, that originally I made it darker and some people said it should be more light, so I changed it.

By the way if you look at the raw rendered composition: [link] - it's obvious that the perspective looks weird in 3d too - it seems the island is floating over the water. This artwork will haunt me for a long time, I can tell. But it's better to leave it as it is right now.. until I learn enough to see immediately, what was wrong. So thank you, it looks really better now, but still not perfect, so I leave it this way.
