My second guess about pushing the skin too far sounds like the answer. The DPI on some skins is low so that they'll render easier, on others it's higher to get better resolution on close-ups.

Are you using Face Off's Skin Realism tools? If so, it's your displacement settings. It's all in the readme files.

If you click on the first one so it gets bigger (or download it you will see what I mean!) Look at her skin close.
