Description Or not ahha.

I'm sorry if I'm not as active then in October aha, I have to do a lot between works and projects for my school since the end is near (stress stress ahah).
I saw that I didn't post this little guy, so here he is before I get some time for a next drawing in my free time haha.
- - - - -
I did this chibi for a project with programming, the feather is for an application that is used. (Sql light)

Ahem.

First of all, I understand chibi styles involve overly accentuating the head and its component features, and you've done the foreshortening on the eyes quite well. However, the head is off balance, and would benefit from either moving it to the left or widening its left side, not to make it perfectly symmetrical to the neck, but to fit in with the impression of width given by the width between the eyes. Alternatively, the left eye (his left) could be moved closer to the bridge of his nose, possibly even a bit obscured by the nose-guard of the helmet - again, to balance out his head in regards to his neck. As a minor detail, feathers don't tend to bend that way; the spine is stiff, and given the context of this picture, it would possibly be more fitting if it was held like a quill instead. The leather skirt could also be helped with individual strips with their own solid definition.

If I'm not mistaken, this was like a quick doodle to you, yes? Because the rest of your gallery puts mine to shame and I'm sure you have a greater grasp of everything I've just written than I do. Sorry about that. You did submit to Project Comment, though, so you at least deserve some constructive criticism, no matter how minor the commenter is in comparison...

Good luck.

Hello from ProjectComment !

First of all, I think the overall piece is a good mixture of cuteness, badassery and a good execution. Chibis are a bit weird when comes to draw mature warriors in this style, but you made it pretty well. Talking about style choices, I think that your piece portray a very "standard" version of spartan's armour. I mean, since it's a chibi, we could say that less is more. However, it can be difficult to make a striking piece whithout adding some details. It's a little like choosing to draw a pirate with a long brown beard, an eyepatch, a parrot and a wooden leg: it would easily recognizable as a pirate, but it wouldn't be that special. So, details can make your spartan special. You can try to look at ancient Greek's pottery pictures and add some decorations to the helmet or try a new colour combination (their helmets could also have black hair on top). So, let your spartan soldier still be spartan, but also YOUR SPECIAL spartan.

(Also, another personal opinion: the gown and the sandals look more Roman than Greek, but again, it's up to you on how to make them).
Remember: this is just my personal opinion about character design. Your piece is very well made and it doesn't have any heavy error, plus is very pleasant to look at. It's up to you the choice to make it more detailed or keep it clean and simple.

About your technique, the only (and easily forgettable) error you made is on the shield. Shield like those of spartan soldiers were round, right? Here is a gallery of images that can help you see how a round shield look like in various poses: www.daz3d.com/mec4d-the-sparta…
(I'm sorry for the fact the site contains buyable content because I don't want to advertise that site, but I found that spartan gallery only there).

The colour choices you made really fit the character and its chibi and adventurous nature. My only advice for your colouring is to blend the various shades of colour a little more (you can easily do that with a smoothing tool in GIMP or Photoshop). It would help your lineart to stand-out.

Cheers to you and to your spartan soldier! ^-^

Hi ! Thank you so much for your comment !! ¨

I agree with making the character special though details ! Sadly since it was for a work, I had to make the chibi as they wanted to. I made other sketchs that weren't chibis per exemple and that were totally different, but it seems they like this one better ahha. But yes, he is indeed pretty standard !
Oh, that's a good point ! True it looks more Roman ! That makes me want to draw another one (but well this time for me haha).

OOOH !! Thank you so much for the link ! (and don't worry about the buyable content, I understand that it's pretty rare to find website that doesn't need you to pay or see adds haha). I think it'll really be a nice reference for future drawings ! It's really useful thanks ! Hmm it's really interesting, I wish I would have found these references before. Oh, and I totally agree for the shield, but well thanks to you and your link I wouldn't make the same error ! Again, ahah thanks it's really a good thing that you show me !

Hmm true again, I always fear a bit to blend too much and that it's not enough textured you know ? I guess I could have blend more in some area hmm ahha I still need to work more on it

Thanks again for your wise words ! <3

No problem, dear, they were just personal opinions.
But keep doing digital art! Although I agree traditional art has its special feel, you can build marvels with digital.

Oh, I can't agree more ! I really like to draw traditionally for the feeling, but I do love to draw digitally. It seems like you have way more freedom in a way (well for me). I miss drawing digitally because I couldn't have the time recently ( I know I lose track of time when I do digital ahah), but well I always keep coming back with it, I just love it too much ! <3

I am relatively new to digital instead! I've spent my whole life drawing traditionally, and this year I bought my first graphic tablet.
I admit that drawing digitally is fun and super-relaxing for me... no need to work quickly, the possibility to simply undo errors, the bright colours...
Still, traditional media is totally different. I can't tell which one is best

I think I tried it some years ago with a bamboo, and I really disliked the feeling. It had to wait until I've got my Intuos as a gift to really begin to enjoy it so much more. And yes it wasn't used everyday ahah I still like to draw traditionally, because in a way I'm more free to draw everywhere ahah, and since I feel the urge to draw really often it's more easy for me to draw traditionally as well. But, as you said too it's really relaxing (and time eating) to draw digitally. I think it's not like we have to choose a better one since they suited different moment It's like there're months when you really want to draw digitally and others traditionally. Traditional have more feelings to it, but digital is soothing ahah

Hello! I found your deviation through ProjectComment ~
Firstly, I love how adorable it is; chibis are always cute, but this has a maturity to it that makes it irresistible. ^m^
The anatomy is incredibly accurate for a chibi, though; that was a little surprising. The one thing that's off is the shield, but that's okay for a chibi like this. My only other suggestion would be to give this at least a little bit of a background, or some kind of atmosphere if that makes sense.
And by the way, the application is SQLITE.

Hi ! Thank you so much for your kind comment !

I agree with the shield, I wasn't totally convinced by it ahha
Oh, I wanted to do some background originally, and I did other drawing that weren't chibis. But since it was for a work, I had to make what they wanted me to do. I guess they wanted/needed a neutral background to take the chibi from it and put it everywhere I guess ahha

Oh yes ! I added it to the description

Ooh, cool! Is it going to be used by the producers of SQLITE?

Oh, no but I would be honored ahha.
It was some programmers that wanted it for their bachelor degree project. They used SQlight. But right now I wouldn't be able to talk much about the project itself O.o' They explained it and all but I can't remember it perfectly, so I don't want to say any wrong informations ahha.

He's ABSOLUTELY darling!

The only constructive critique I can think to give has to do with anatomy. The placement of his left eye is a little off. I feel, speaking from a perspective point, that it should be closer toward the center eye piece rather. As it stands it's the same space away from the eyepiece as the other eye is, which isn't anatomically correct if we consider that his right eye is closer to us.  Perhaps it's more just that his head is a little too stretched toward the left? Also, the plume row is situated at an odd angle with the alignment of his head piece.

That aside, this is wonderful! The shading is spot on. The high lights are spot on. The contrast between cool and warm colors are spot on even with skin tone. All in all a great piece!

Hi ! Thank you so much for your comment !

Oh, you're right ! It's a really good point. Ooh huugh now that I see it I can see how wrong it is haha. Thank you for pointing that out!
The plume row is the feather right ? (ahah sorry)

But thanks ahha <3

Yes this is ! This is from an programming application, so I was asked to put a feather pen for that purpose. I like that idea too, since feather can be see as wisdom too ahah
Thanks for the comment !
