Description some techniques old, some new; i'm refining the oil on canvas technique (see [link] ), the best incarnation of which is still busy rendering (and no one will like). still no postprocessing on this render, but i do some tricks with the "oil density" (though still entirely in my program, with 128/256bit colour processing) on the forthcoming one.

the first buds of spring, time of my birthday, are beginning to appear.

I might just as well favourite everything. This is absolutely fantastic. In form it shares elements of design that I try to explore in my pieces, though this is far, far more accomplished.

Such a cool picture... It would be interesting to see an interactive version of this, where you could crawl around in there or something, I'm not sure.

So this is a fractal? It looks almost like you created it with digital painting techniques, which is nice.

lyc In reply to axcho [2008-01-20 00:28:56 +0000 UTC]

yup, it's a fractal, and i suppose you could say the rendering method is a digital painting technique, it just sprays coloured points over the image plane according to a dynamical system (the flame-fractal algorithm).

i'm constantly disappointed that i didn't save the full resolution version of this image (originally it was about 2gb i guess, floating point rgb with alpha), at that stage my program didn't do it by default and for some of my best fractals i forgot to extract it manually for a print

much appreciated

btw, i recently revived my 2d flame-fractal program and hope to make some new images with it after my exams these "wispy" type fractals look really nice i think, and recently i posted a part of a print-resolution image of my deviation "oneiric", which shows the same "curling hairs", here: [link]

This is beautiful and elegant, not just the formula but the composition as well. I really like those smooth, curvy strings. I just wish the brown/black splotches in the center weren't there, they look almost like dirt stains. But it isn't too bad really.

thanks, glad you liked it the darkish parts, well, i couldn't really make them another colour (tried a few) and removing them took a lot of the texture out of the whole pic, looked kinda like a bug splatting on a windshield just a smooth green splat.

thanks

btw, this is how big my screen is (pixel-wise), length goes 24" from elbow to fingertip! as a woodworker might say, "better too long than too short" (nothing stopping people from resizing down, but upscaling is ugly).

thanks! i'm not sure if i mentioned it, but i released some versions of the app, see for yourself [link] i can offer some rendering / custom exes if you want to make something big out of any good fractals you get

i'm *so* glad you don't take it personally; for one thing, it's a single render and you've done better on average (that's relative opinion of course), so it's in both our interests to see you return to those heights i really did like the colours in that green/red piece: even if i don't remember the shape of it i can still clearly remember the colour scheme!
