Description Meeting of Fronts
162"x32"
Oil on Canvas

I call this the centerpiece to my show. Being 13.5x2.5 feet in dimension, it was balls to paint, but really fun. It came to embody far more than I originally projected upon it when I had the idea. It looks at ones sense of self as defined on an individual basis and as part of a group, and the complex balancing act one must perform in order to navigate the pressures of belonging and conforming. The subjects are the men from my swim team as they were in the week after our state championship meet. Still dripping with the bittersweet residue of accomplishment and disbanding. In other words at the peak and base of a mountain. I like to think of this as a land scape.

This is the piece that I mentioned in my journal, having made it to New York... which, by the way, was sold!

Artist Statement:
This body of work explores commonality on the basis of the body. So ripe with potential to communicate, I wanted to explore what information is accessible in the absence of recognizable external features such as clothing, hair and the face with it's connection through the eyes.

Having been part of a swim team for 10 years of my life, I've found many of these features to be denied, and head-shaving to be one of the most radical. A practice equally rich with history, meaning and significance, there is a transformative power to head-shaving, and when the action taken into a public realm as an exercise done in and by a group the notion of self is challenged. The head becomes a multiple, the outward individuality is negated, and there is a complex engagement between unity and conformity. This series of work ultimately explores the more intimate influence that alteration of the exterior has on the interior.

The image quality is fairly lousy, but since the canvas is 13 feet wide, that sort of quality is unavoidable if I don't splice individual shots together. So sorry for that. :/

WHAT THE BALLS?!
To the right there's a section saying 'camera data' and it lists the camera type, date, editing software and so much more... info that, since my friend documented the show for me, I wasn't even keen to. Deviantart, you clever shrew... you scare me.

Thanks so much Katherine. For the most part, they were pretty hit or miss. The good shows were awesome, and the one's that weren't good were pretty underwhelming.

Was this sold to a private collector or is it somewhere that it might be viewable to the public? I'd love to see this in person.

lydario In reply to sparksel [2012-06-15 02:09:58 +0000 UTC]

Uh, I guess you could call him a private collector. It was purchased for the guys home, so it's not in a public place. It would have been great to have it in such a place, but I trust it's going to a good place.

Haha that was my reaction to deviantARTs recording of the camera data. Before I would list the details myself. Lovely painting, it really does look significant, but without your description I wouldn't have know exactly about what.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lydario In reply to GemmaSuen [2012-06-08 04:05:35 +0000 UTC]

It's nice to have the background, but what I wanted the painting to do was have an impact that would affect people in a similar way, but no so much a way that told them that 'this is what it is'. Although it's a painting of my swim team, it's not a painting about them, if that makes sense.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GemmaSuen In reply to lydario [2012-06-08 12:33:37 +0000 UTC]

My take on the painting is a bit silly. There are a few things that maybe I'm just over thinking, like the black sheep, or how I could imagine myself standing behind a crowd while looking at it- bit like how soldiers are lined up I guess. The composition is really pleasant, but I'm really not great with deciphering meanings. There's also something I feel that suggests a question of identity or/and family with how everyone seems to have the same haircut and lack of clothing... haha wonderful still!

I didn't mean to offend anyone or to be racist, I already made that clear to the artist. If it were one pale person among a multitude of dark/tan skinned, I would have said the same thing. I say black sheep, not for the ethnicity or colour of skin but for the individual that looks to be standing alone in a crowd that has common folk. It's not the ethnicity that makes him different, but it's a painting that has colours and composition that can symbolise it(at least in my eyes). Why is there only one dark man? Is what I keep thinking- and perhaps that it's just a coincidence.

Tell me, what did you think I meant? I need to know so that I won't say something stupid again. The last person I know to be racist is myself...

haha sorry if I offended, I didn't mean it that way. I just noticed that there's only one dark skinned person while the rest were ochre or light skinned- but I think that goes towards composition too.

MaevesChild [2012-06-08 02:08:24 +0000 UTC]

I had a totally different reaction than I think was intended. Instead of seeing this lack of identity, this conformity -- I saw that although we as humans has some differences (the shades of flesh, the shape of the bones in our heads ,etc) we are more alike than we think. There is a unity of human experience and this is a more important thing to know. Individuality is fine a good, but its the desire to be different sometimes that seems to tear us apart.

lydario In reply to MaevesChild [2012-06-08 04:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. My experience dictates that community is necessary, being a part of a group is important and necessary, but in being a part of many I found it hard to navigate myself. Figuring out who I am amidst the imposed expectations and what not. Glad to hear what your thoughts are though.

You're right, they all look almost the same. Head-shaving is something very useful for brainwashing too, as you said, it challenges the notion of the self. It may be the reason why so many recruits crave tattoos I guess.. Make believe we added tattoos to the backs you drew, it'd help them wouldn't it?

lydario In reply to GothicShade [2012-09-20 19:54:48 +0000 UTC]

That's a really good point actually. In private schools where uniforms are worn, many also do what ever they can to stand out, be it through hair or any other sort of alterations.
