Description Two Messerschmitt 109's has just shot down a Spitfire in the middle of nowhere.

This brought back memories of building models in my youth
These 3D aircraft models were made by Anders Lejczak.

pay no attention to the gallery.... I love the ww2 depictions that you do.  Please carry on.  too few will remember those years of air warfare.  Thank you.

Thank you I loved assembling WW2 models in my youth a long time ago before there even were things like home computers, so these renders are a sort of nostalgia trips for me

It is a nice render but there are a few things that stick out that break the illusion.

First is the smoke. At 100mph+ (yea, I am pretty sure its 100+ as it stalls flaps up just under 80 with a best glide at just under 90 but this guy has nose down and no flaps and was probably running like a scalded dog in combat so he is doing well above those), it shouldn't look the way it does. The fire itself though, very nicely done! Smoke would be drug along with the aircraft as its emitted from the fire. When first emitted, its doing the speed of the plane and rapidly slows to wind speed. Some will travel farther as its slowed, hence the blur/spread. Here (mostly a fuel spray but there is plenty of smoke too to get the idea):

Next, unless the image was shot at <1/2000'th of a second, the props are way to crisp. I get the spitfire may have a seized engine, but the ME's don't.

Lastly, the mountains, well, they just don't look right for anywhere these planes would have been duking it out. They also all have the same pointy shape. Pretty unusual anywhere in nature.

I like the image, love the concept and I think you did really good on most of the execution of it and made very good use of the tools at hand. But, for me, the details when I look at it, keep it from being a photograph.

Yes, those are valid points for professional photo realistic work
Mine however is just an evening of fun by a hobbyist using simple Poser models.

A lot of renderers like to use things like motion and DOF blur in the name of realism. In reality there is no such thing, it's just limitations of the slowness of optics, our eyes, our brain... so in a way adding blur is adding unrealism to suit our perceptions and expectations. It can make render times go through the roof too

That's a fun part of 3D, I could make the planes duke it out on Mars if I wanted to

Thank you Well, I have to date not posted a single image I would consider even remotely to be a photograph. I am not sure if that is even possible with my skills, tools and resources. They look like what they are, computer graphics made with low end tools and resources in an evening or two.

I am not talking about DOF or motion blur (well, other than the props). I am talking about the smoke itself. It would be distorted as it begins to mix with the air. When its emitted from the fire, its doing 100mph but the air its mixing with is moving far less. It would rapidly blend with the air making it appear soft along the edges.

I agree that many do go overboard with DOF in 3d renders. I am a long time Bryce (back to Bryce 2) and Poser (back to Poser 3) so I fully understand what DOF can do to render times and it ain't pretty I had a render going for over a week using 4 PCs back in Bryce 5 beta at Corel. All due to volumetrics and DOF. They turned a 30 minute render into over a week with a simple checkbox

I like the image you made or I wouldn't have fave'd, I was just trying to help you improve on it and make the next one better. I didn't mean to upset you, sorry if I did.

Nice, but I'm curious, what is a Polish Spitfire doing in Africa?

A British Spitfire flown by a Polish pilot and it seems to be falling out of the sky

Nice work man!
When I saw this as a thumbnail I thought it was a concept piece by one of the 2d artists I watch. Were the mountains all from Vue, and what was rendered in Poser?

I've GOT to get into 3D again! My poor 2D painting skills can't cut it! D:

Thanks Andy
All is rendered with Vue in this image. I set up and saved the aircraft in Poser and then I imported them into the Vue scene with the mountains. I usually render using the Poser shader tree in Vue. One can get better results by replacing Poser materials with Vue materials, if one thinks it's worth the time and work.
Photoshop was used to add flames and more smoke, plus a bit of dirt on the plane. The original render is also a bit more "yellow" and I made it a bit more "blue". In a similar way that you once showed me

From where I'm sitting your best 2D work is awesome!

Oh, nice! I thought you might have done separate renders then put them together in PS.

Cheers, man! I'm glad some my nonsense has helped!

Hehe... your bit of "nonsense" is the best tip I've ever had!
It convinced me to experiment more on my renders. A little nudge in the right direction is all it takes sometimes.
