Actually she only knows 5-8 thousand year old gem culture and only was is tough to her by a renegade faction, gem tech has evolved in that time (though to be fair the culture seems stagnant and probably hasn't changed). Still they are a totalitarian society literally built to serve their leaders and unless those leaders are gone we won't have peace with them gems, more so even with them gone war is the most likely outcome. Best to arm up and spend several ceturies building ships and troops for a nasty fight.

Problem is the control center on the mom leads us to believe that not all diamonds would be on the home world, mix in how fast they can warp away and even blowing up the home world may not be enough. I'm afraid humanity would need centuries to build the ships and troops and millenia of war to defeat the gem threat. Though we are something they would never see coming, a non gem sentient that is a threat.
