Description A little break I took from NSFW stuff so I could draw guys wearing more clothes! This piece was mainly inspired by one of my favourite mangas, Emma: A Victorian Romance by Kaoru Mori where I really appreciated the accurate detail given to the costuming, architecture and interior design of the backgrounds. I found out that Ms. Mori actually did a lot of research into the Victorian era as well as a lot of reference material in order to get almost everything right and true to the time period. And it was her disdain for the modern anime 'meido' and the inaccuracy with which Japan depicted European historical culture that made me very fussy when it came to historical costuming and production design in period dramas and historical anime.

Despite the fact that the 'Emma' manga and a lot of her works show a lot of love towards depicting the female figure and fashion in particular, I had a liking towards the way she drew men in that manga, especially when they wore well-cut white tie suits like the ones I've drawn here. They were not flashy or colourful at all like most manga/anime white tie suits today, but they were the bare-bones version which have an understated elegance and well-tailored look to them. Moreover, I kind of like that they filled out a fuller figure to complement masculine proportions compared to the typical manga/anime ones which are very skinny in my opinion.

Anyway, the young men changing and having banter at the front are just called 'Footmen' in the hierarchy of servants in Victorian English culture, but the middle-aged man at the back is of senior position, with the title of 'Butler'. Unlike the modern usage of 'butler' today, a butler was the most senior position of a male servant in a wealthy household. Today, it is quite common to just colloquially call a male servant wearing a suit a 'butler', but usually they must also have more advanced or specialized skills that set them apart from the regular maids in order to earn this professional title.|

For a beardless variation, it's on my twitter!
