After spending some time in this musical subculture you get to know a lot of people, and a lot of tastes and inclinations regarding Metal and all of its children. You'd think that there might be a consensus between the followers but I get surprised/amused by how a fan of certain metal sub-genre can despise another sub-genre as much as he/she'd despise Justin Bieber.

Which amuses me.

Also this is just for fun, and of course, not everyone is like this, and yeah I know I didn't feature Atmospheric, Dark, Fusion, Industrial, Melodic, Sludge, Stoner, etc, etc, etc here. The graphic is already crowded enough as it is ^_^

Funny enough, I can't get into anything harder than gothic or symphonic metal.

I can't STAND growling.

My types of bands are Nightwish, Evanescence, The Birthday Massacre (except it's more rock), Within Temptation, HIM, Epica, Kamelot, Apocalyptica, Lacuna Coil, Linkin Park, Blutengel, and the musician Adrian Von Ziegler and the singer Tarja Turunen.

I fall under the pop fan, since I'm not very fond of metal. (It has to do with metal's tendency to be very loud, and I have sensory issues.)

Funny, I'd say my attitude is just past the middle between "Dark poetry" and "Faster!" but sub-genre progression wise I'm further along, currently deep in Death Metal and Deathcore as my heaviest listens.

Anywho great image, pretty damn accurate...

lol not quite the case for me i went from thrash to symphonic to nu to power to black/death and really don't give a shit about stupid "blacked death doom metal" like, it doesn't mean anything. still love this, to the people who think it's offensive, it is a joke.

I favorited this along while back but someone screencapped and posted an unsavory message on a forum about how I supposedly didn't get the point of this picture and how they think i'm 'talking out of my ass' when it comes to art,  but this does in a way accurately portray musical tastes when it comes to metal in some forum,  I admit the more extreme ones aren't to my taste but I tolerate them.

I'm a fan of all these genres. I listen to Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Gothic Metal, NWOBHM, Power Metal, Viking Metal, Folk Metal, Doom Metal, Alternative Metal, Nu-Metal, Industrial Metal, Progressive Metal, Grindcore, Black Metal, and Deathcore. I also listen to New Wave, Punk Rock, Alternative Rock, Darkwave, Synthpop, or any other cool sounding music. Hell, I listen to Lindsey Stirling, who plays what I like to call Neo-Classical Dubstep.

Heeee nice~ Though as someone pointed out, the "metal horns" are done inaccurately - those people are actually saying 'I Love You" in American sign language. !

My musical journey started out at a 180 basically from where I am now. O vO!
Grew up early on with [this] kinda stuff. Eventually moved to pop, rock, etc down the ever darker sliding scale of teh metulz so now the darkest/br00talist thing I like is [this] . However, I don't stay in one place.  I keep moving all around the different levels. I love [Epic Rap Battles of History] , I've really enjoyed what I've heard of [Electro Swing] , [Punk] , etc etc etc rjkshgdfg bunches of other genres of varying levels on the scale of pop-y to extreme music. Also a couple of random [foreign] [artists]

So while the majority of my interests, musically, are in eeeehh probably anywhere from Symphonic to Death metal [or rock stuff of some kind], I still love a bunch of other styles. XDa Even Gangnam Style and The Fox P:
With that ramble out of the way, there are a lot of metalheads with mentalities like this. XDa Metul is srs bsns to them. hue.

... Actually this kind of reminds me of this one picture [here] hehehee

ok i use to listen to linkin park and think they brutal.i was 9 when i heard them and had never heard any thing like them.chester screaming and shit.after that a bit heavy on the guitars bon jovi's album have a nice day.the whole album i use to listen every day for a whole year.mixture of alt metal, country and glam metal.easy easy happy happy lyrics, but more guitars than linkin park and then system of a down chaotic on the guitars as compared to b.j and l.p.lyrically more heavy, beautiful and varying styles of vocals
and then finally this year in 2014 i became  a proper metalhead listening to stuff traditional metal, thrash, melodic death, doom, funeral doom, melodic thrash, power metal, speed metal, alternative meta.grindcore, groove metal, hard rock, psychedelic rock, symphonic metal, metalcore, deathcore, black metal and just really constantly exploring metal sub genres.yup this evolution has some credibility in terms of where i stand with metal, but not seeing myself becoming a metal elitist.lot more shut to explore.awesome fun evolution.nice stuff

Yep, just about sums it up. I personally probably sit comfortably around 7, though I'll readily swing as high as an 8 or as low as a 3 (In other words, I pretty much find anything from power metal and hard rock, up to melodeath and symphonic black metal).

az-amon-ra [2013-10-05 00:19:04 +0000 UTC]

I've never really understood the idea of sub-genres or whatever since the distinctions always seemed vague to me.  Of course I go on a song by song basis for all music so I've never followed a particular band or even a type of music.  It largely depends on my mood and whether I like the song.  I can understand the appeal of um whatever the hell the shouting/growling stuff is called at the moment but personally I find it kinda boring. *shrug*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

M-EX In reply to az-amon-ra [2014-01-09 19:39:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's okay if you find it that way but definitely the differences exist. Symphonic metal will not sound like thrash metal, and doom metal and pagan metal can be just as different, but the labels are not there to limit, but to identify; quite often the genres mix and create amazing things.

az-amon-ra In reply to M-EX [2014-01-11 01:07:51 +0000 UTC]

I don't doubt that there is a difference I just have difficulty seeing, well hearing it actually.  Of course since I don't bother to learn the names of music types since I don't go looking for specific types of music in shops, I couldn't tell which is which anyway.

I started out at nu metal and rap metal,I always thought that I would hate non-clean vocals. Then I got into industrial and tharsh metal. Then I listened to some death metal and actual liked it! Right now I'm in the grindcore phase(Still like nu,rap, thrash and industrial metal though).

nick98 [2013-08-06 18:12:24 +0000 UTC]

I listen to almost everything. Probably the hardest I have ever got to hear as particular genre is metalcore (All That Remains, Chimaira, Dir en grey (if we can classify them as such)), groove metal (Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch) and thrash metal (the Big Four, obviously). I do accept the very hardest genres such as death metal and black metal as music, but I never listen to them. My favorite type of music is electronic music ('specially drum and bass, industrial, house, trance and dubstep), but I definitely listen to pop, rock and metal too.

The-SHM-loves-Asimov [2013-07-13 18:36:07 +0000 UTC]

I brutalized this path because I started listening to metal at around 2-3 years of age and remained almost squarely with Alternative Metal, Nü-metal, and Popular Metal (Enter Sandman, Iron Man, Crazy Train) until I discovered Electric Wizard and doom metal/stoner doom.
LUCKILY, I soon became intrigued by stoner metal's love for blues chords, discovered psychedelic blues rock, then discovered blues rock and classic rock, then discovered rock-n-roll (as opposed to rock), then discovered jazz, then discovered electro-jazz, then found out that electro-jazz is the music of Jet Set Radio Future, rediscovered electronica, and came back around to alternative/pop music with an obvious place in my heart dedicated to blues/stoner/doom metal.
But now I've moved to sludge metal and drone metal, so...
Of course, I can't help but love some black metal and melodeath now and again. Power metal is always good, and I don't think hair metal is as bad as they say. Dubmetal is just plain "dubstep + death metal" and I've never been a fan of modern metalcore.
But when I discovered my soft spot for modern pop, I was first disgusted, then in denial, then begged Satan that I'll be good again, then accepted that "You know what= I like Bruno Mars. I like Ed Sheeran. I like Imagine Dragons. I like Radiohead. I like Whitechapel. I like Solitude Aeturnus. There you go. I'm not hiding it anymore."
If only more people...
PS- I discovered why labels are important, but can become trite. They're important because I'm damn sure Sunn 0))) is metal as much as I'm damn sure Cannibal Corpse is metal. All hell knows they don't sound anywhere near the same. But I can see how "Melo-nü-post-islamic-unblack-rap-dubstep-hair-kei-country-zydeco-billy-nintendo-metal" is pretty damn dumb.
