Description "'With one hand thou givest,' [Ungoliant] said; 'with the left only. Open thy right hand.'
In his right hand Morgoth held close the Silmarils... 'Nay!' he said. 'Thou hast had thy due. For with my power that I put into thee thy work was accomplished. I need thee no more. These things thou shalt not have, nor see. I name them unto myself for ever.'
But Ungoliant had grown great, and he less by the power that had gone out of him; and she rose against him, and her cloud closed about him, and she enmeshed him in a web of clinging thongs to strangle him. Then Morgoth sent forth a terrible cry, that echoed in the mountains. Therefore that region was called Lammoth; for the echoes of his voice dwelt there ever after, so that any who cried aloud in that land awoke them... The cry of Morgoth in that hour was the greatest and most dreadful that was ever heard in the northern world; the mountains shook, and the earth trembled, and rocks were riven asunder."
~J. R. R. Tolkien

I think this is the best drawing I've done in a while. The idea is that the casket containing the Silmarils is the light source.

OMG When I read this scene from the book, I was really upset. Morgoth is a really bad Valar, but I felt fear for him when he was attacked by this horrible Ungoliant -i hate her !-. I wanted also draw this scene but you did it fist, and the result is really awesome -but what a shame, it would be better with colors if I may say this ^^-. So amazing art for this really amazing and frightening scene

I'm glad you think so, that's what I was going for. I mean, even Morgoth the Black Foe of the World just about wet his pants here.

It could do with a lot more shading, but overall it looks very good! The pose you used is a very difficult one to draw, but you captured it nicely. If you shaded it a bit more confidently, it'd be perfect!

This is fairly amazing.

Tolkien's badguys always get similar armor.

Thanks a lot, man.

Yeah, that's true, but I really don't think they'd look good in anything else...

I'm gonna favourite it.

Nah, that armor absolutely speaks to their intent, preferred method of approach and... well... character.

phew, thats a good pose there. Also like the detail of the spiders web on the guy. Lets see if I can dig in my memory.. Ungoliant is some ancestor of Shelob? Or 'mother-spider', perhaps?

Thanks! Yeah, she's an ancestor of all the abnormally large spiders in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
