One that makes you twice, and then look again.
The man is not wearing shoes, I wonder why and wonder at the story behind the photograph.

It's one of many sad stories we find everyday, everywhere...
More than once I saw them begging outside an old cathedral, in Coimbra. They sit on these stairs, patiently waiting for some charity. Sometimes the man says some words in a foreign language that we can't understand. We only understand that desperate suppliant shine in his eyes. And it touches you deeply. Sometimes the child is sleeping on the man's lap, when he's tired of waiting and listening to his father's promises of a more colourful life...

I agree with you, Liz. Sometimes I wonder whether they don't really have anywhere else to stay or they're "used" to arouse more compassion...

In some cases children are used to tug heartstrings and pursestrings. A Roma woman used to call to my house with her children, they were the same ages as my boys. She started calling during the summer so it wasn't an issue seeing her children with her. When she called after school term had begun I asked her why her children were not in school. She made all sorts of excuses, none of them valid. She was living in a refugee center with a school attached, there was no reason for her children to be with her while she was begging except to make people feel a stab of guilt. I got very annoyed, I could not understand why she wouldn't give her daughters the benefit of an education instead of condemning the to a life of begging for alms.

That would annoy me too
But in certain situations I don't dare to judge some behaviours because I can't imagine what those people have been through and it must be so difficult to act correctly when life is miserable.
I know there would be a lot to add to this issue... we could go on for hours.
