Description I wanted to create a mech which would be fun to use in a multiplayer FPS set in the near future. Three players share one mech; One driver and two gunners using their devestating CIWS pods independently.
I am not quite happy with this one, I kept adding and deleting elements for almost a month. I would love to read some constructive criticism.

Maybe add grenade launchers, or a small helo-drone that can map enemy positions, and maybe even self destruct if need be?
could be launched from the top, or back.

Why don't you go and light an M80 and stand right next to it. When it explodes, just jump and see if you can escape the shock wave.

Hi!

I can give you a critique

At first: The Mech isn't bad. It has a modern style, a little bit like these Metal Gear stuff and the overall shape is good.

There's a lot of comments here, so I don't want to write a novel.

If you look at the details, there's a few disadvantages, that I don't like. The Style is important for designs like this, but functionality also. What would I do?

Torso: The backbone looks too small for my taste, because you have to build in wires, connections, servos ect... + it would be good for a machine like that, to have the ability to rotate the torso.

Weapons: The shape is cool, but they don't work. It looks like rotary style cannon's, but with the angled shape, they can't rotate. The shell ejector is missing, there is no gear for horizontal aiming/moving and no logical ammunition feeding.

Omnisensor: The gear for horizontal moving is missing. Otherwise, there is not enough space to rotate the sensor on this axis.

Myomer Muscles: I don't know why there's a description for this, on especially that place. I can't see a logical connection for myomer muscles from this place, to the rest of the leg or hip.

Legs: The shape is cool, but you have no shock absorbing qualities, because the mech is already in the squat.

Feet: It works with the design, but it is a disadvantage in the reality. The mech could walk with feets like that, but the stability and balance is much wors in comparison to bigger ones.

Back up Weapon: Take a bigger one with 7,62mm caliber. That's a machine. They have no problem with higher recoil and ammunition weight. The 7,62 mm caliber have a higher accuracy, range and stopping power. If you like to use proved and tested german weapons, take the MG3.

Maybe it should have some visible stowage. Maybe some canards for quick burst flight stabilisation/handling. Slightly bulkyer torso. Maybe some more axis points. Mount the guns a bit lower for more stable firing. Visible raedome or nav equipment. Play with the feet a bit more. Make it more modular and more connection points for add ons. Cutters for vines encase it goes jungle. Lights.

Hmm...I would actually argue that it is not a good mech design. Visually its impressive, Under Critical and Creative Destruction/Destructive Creation perceptions it falls very short.

Β

3 personnel mechs usually are in support or command functions. ieg artillery, electronic warfare, intelligence gathering, or a command mech. [something rarely seen in mech universes.]Β

At most a mech can be handled by one operator/ or have two 1 pilot/1 gunner-Weapons Officer [WO].

Also these persons can be organized in various ways to increase their effectiveness in combat.Β

Inline [one behind the other.] or Tandem [side by side.]Β

The mini-gun/chain gun/CIWS-Phalanx/Gattling Gun is a bit overused as a concept of weaponry, there are weapons that give much more lethal and efficient effects for their size and weight. Metal Storm for example is a digitally fired pre-loaded series of barrels that can set between various firing settings with the highest rate of fire being a million rounds per minute. But can be alternated down to low rates to single fire as well as fire the package of barrels like a shot gun! Also you can adapt concepts like the RSMG-Rocket Sub Machine Gun, [a concept from the Vietnam War era.] that allows a 500 rpm fire rate, but also has lethal grenade/flechette submunitions-meaning one mech can hold up a vastly larger number of threats by itself.Β

Electronics in a mech means that anyone with some sense of warfare will attempt either to blind it, hack it, or EMP/EMW [Electromagnetic Pulse or Warfare.] turning it into one of the worst death traps, plus you are very very tall you can't bail out of a mech like a tank...and usually that means the crew is massacred.Β

The legs are a mechs best friend, but also its worst enemy. Mechs move slower than comparable armor units like tanks and hover tanks, and even are out paced by armored trains! However then have advantages in being able to access terrains than normally other types of armor can not penetrate or use. The height of a mech makes it useful in urban warfare, but this height makes it easily attacked in close in situations usually from the roofs of buildings or ground floors, and in open ground the height makes them a perfect target for all other armor classes. [Because they are skylined [silhouetted] against the horizon, a fatal flaw of a majority of mech design.]Β

Generally, bi-pedal [two legs] mechs are highly vulnerable in combat, because their design makes them easy to cripple. quadruped/hexaped/octaped [4/6/8] legged designs are preferrable and are more useful since they can get close to the ground. The legs feet need to be broad enough to spread out the weight of the mech so as to use the maximum number of terrain variables to its advantage. This design is akin to a super model on stiletto heels, which means it is highly limited in functionality and is limited to high quality roads that can handle its super focused weight on two points. If I may put it bluntly, if you put a person in heels and a person in tennis shoes who would win a cross country race? Β And because the feet are so small this means that the weight of this mech is overkill even for the heaviest pressure sensor on an AT mine...meaning its toast with AT mines around. Also the legs are so tight that a couple of cables strung across a road would be sufficient to keep this mech away.Β

The "waist" of this mech is also a concern...because it is so thin that a focused aimed shot from anything with severe Armor Piercing capacity. Will do in this mech in a heartbeat, literally blowing it clean in half.Β

The self-defense capacity of this mech, after attached weapons are expended is laughable. MG4? 7.62mm? And its fixed in a shoulder mount...meaning that the mech has to swing its whole body or head around to engage a threat and an infantry one at that, anything larger and its KAPO big time. A mech has to at minimum have a 20mm cannon, if not a 13mm Machine Gun, .50/.51 [12.7mm] caliber Machine Gun, or a 35/40mm grenade launcher, in either a chin turret/dorsal turret/ventral turret/ or trainable side mount slaved to a pilot/gunners helmet so it can be fired without turning the mech much. Close in defense will be provided by either S-mind launchers that shoot a blast of ball bearings against infantry closing in around a mech, Interceptors like the Iron Dome/Shield system used by the Israelis on their tanks. Including EM generators and Laser Blinders that are used against guided AT missiles. Smoke Grenade launchers to give the mech ways to create visual cover for its movement or to escape enemy attacks. For heavier armored threats a 37/40/45/57/75/76mm cannon will do perfectly.Β

It has some ideas that are intriguing, but to me the concept can be done in by a group of ill-trained militia men with a rocket launcher on a pick up truck. Or even better a suicide bomber walking up to its legs, or a person placing a sticky AT grenade to its legs.Β

I think you have some very good ideas, just refine your thinking and you might go a very long way creatively with your ideas. Think about how one would counter such a vehicle, and you can develope some very interesting designs and concepts draw from real life, and real life has some really really strange things that you would never expect to see. [Like the walking truck that was developed in the United State during the Vietname War and inspired George Lucas's AT-AT walkers.]

I hope this wasn't too harsh or huge...but it is just a few concepts that I know and think about.Β

First thanks for your comment AND your time. First of all you are absolutely right with all your ideas and concerns, but I wanted this mech to be kind of a tribute to Izmojuki's vertical tanks from Steel Battalion and the Metal Gear Gekko as well, which wouldn't be that practical as well in real life IMO... :/ I think mecha design doesn't have to be always 100% realistic, while a certain degree of realism can please the eye. To me, a Mobile Suit seems ridiculous, while others love that humanoid style. On the other hand, american-style mechs like the ones in mechwarror look extremely industrial and war-torn, what is cool, but i like a style that combines the asthetics of japanese designs with a certain amount of realism, it is definitly a matter of taste.Β  Though, I was thinking about several aspects you mentioned, especially with the weaponry in mind. I mainly chose this rotary-gun-style out of asthetical reasons, I just don't like Metal Storm, it doesn't rotate or tons of empty shells are ejected or you see mechanical parts moving... It seems a little boring to me.
But I will definitly take your advice to hear and rethink the roles of my mechs while spending more time to create more plausible weapon systems.
I would sum up that it is always a matter of taste to find the right balance between fiction and realism, at last, a war machine with legs is ridiculous itself, but let's see what I will say about that in fifteen years.
I like your comment, it makes me think. A lot.

That is very good to hear. I am not much of a fan of Gundam/Votom/Knightmare style mechs because they usually tend to be over used and many times have glaring problems.Β

A blend is better than a vulnerable purist vision. It helps.Β

That is true...oh a good source for you might be looking into the Supreme Commander 1 and 2 series of games their mech units vary quite widely in design and concept.Β

I hope my ideas will help you with new ideas, and develop interesting ideas. Here are three that might intrigue you.Β

If you look up on you tube the keyword "Chameleon Tank" you will get a movie on a British Prototype tank that can change its infrared signature [heat] to mimic or fake being something else. You also have plastic armor...which has been in use since World War II. [U.S. military designed it as HCR2...it was designed to protect tanks from the feared Flak 88.] And gel armor.Β

Actually a war machine with legs is not really a joke...its just a matter of when and how...the traditionalists are too invested in tracked tanks after World War II. Walkers have been around before and since World War II. It just wasn't till the Vietnam War that it became actually possible. Currently in my corner of America we have logging companies that use walking mech logging vehicles for step hillside and riversides that other vehicles can't acccess. So the applications are there...just others don't see it.Β

Oh and the U.S. military has PedMan...a walking bipedal humanoid drone. [Think Star Wars battle droid.] And there is the civilian spring walker design which can be upgraded to hydralic or electrical boosts.Β

I hope it will help with everything.

Drop by anytime if you would like some ideas.Β

I am happy..that my comment was helpful, usually I tend to get a lot worse replies back.Β

Tiny feet means a lot of weight on the ground, unless the mech is itself quite light. Force x area = pressure, that is why tanks are able to drive through desert where other vehicles would find it difficult, their treads are wide enough to spread the weight.

Scale would be helpful.

Otherwise, I cannot find fault. Your designs remind me of Steel Battalion, and I am not drawing any connections.
