It belongs to the taxum VALVORICTA: www.deviantart.com/macheemi/ar…
basic anatomy: www.deviantart.com/macheemi/ar…
It is an abundant cosmopolitan species inhabiting the worldwide seas of the planet.
Individuals of this species tend to group in thousands . The formations in which they swim in help them find the best locations to feed. Their main diet consists of microscopic zooplankton.
This particular species is approximately 10 cm long. They are a prey item for various predatory species.
1: a egg. It develops in the egg chamber location of which is indicated by the arrow pointing to the animals back. there it is also internally fertilized by the male.
2: a larva- the larval stage of Valvoricta posseses some traits long lost in evolution in the adult forms. The larvae live in the mothers egg chamber, which inflates creating something like a pouch for them to hide in.
the larvae ocassionally stick their head out of the egg chamber opening an catch food material from the water. like this, there can be as many as 20 larvae living in their mothers pouch
after they pupate, they leave the mothers pouch their morphology is the same as that of their parents and they become a part of the school/flock ...
3: A ,,pregnant" mother with her pouch inflated with larvae is exhibiting a defense mechanism of the species: their waste material is a dark liquid. they exhaust it under pressure creating a misty cloud which then
chemically and optically distracts predators.
