Description An idea of an aquatic open-sea predator for my exobiology project Temere.
It is not completely canonical yet, but that's how my projects go so in future this critter will probably be changed a bit.

As of now, the animal doesn't have a latin name. None of the taxa of Temere's life does, so this might be a challenge for you guys reading this, if you have an idea for a fitting name, I'm all in!
It's origin can be found here>

This animal is an active predator hunting smaller swimming creatures and catching them with its elongated pair of secondary beak-like jaws. The smaller primary and tertiary ones are used for processing prey to smaller, edible pieces.
All of the jaw pieces evolved from basket-like structures and bristles, which it's ancestors used for filterfeeding on plankton. The bristles are still present on the inside of the animal's digestive system, where they process the food further and extract nutrients from it.

It has a pair of composite eyes, on the sides of the head and a series of sensory organs under the eyes detecting movement, changes in water composition and provide smell.

It also has a pair of openings through which water passes to animal's internal gills, exiting it near the anus through four pairs of openings.

On the very top of the head there is a pair of retractable genitalia. The animals copulation looks like two individuals scratching foreheads against each other. The females carry their eggs in a special cavity behind the genitalia on their backs, where the hatchlings experience their larval stage, giving birth to 1-3 young resembling the adults, just much smaller in size.

The animal has four tail fins, which it can move to a certain degree, modifying it's way of swimming . Most of the times it's performing a up and down motion like Earth's dolphins.

Hope you will like it!

Don't limit yourself by comparing yourself to others and embrace what is special about your own work! There is really no big thinking behind this creature other than observing the already existing ones.

Usually I'd like to think xenobiologists/settlers would give common names based on exactly what they see/observe the creature doing. Though the onomatopoeia naming route is also advised. As a Filipino I've noticed a lot of the words for animals used in my language seem to be onomatopoeias. What sound do you imagine this to make?

I hazard a guess that early Filipinos just named animals or things after the sound they made OR sounds that they think the thing makes. I'm no expert in my native language as I grew up in the USA, but as a writer I can kind of pick up on things.

I'm working on a project myself but more on the fantasy side. I'm trying an alternate reality where sea creatures evolved to take place on land and vice versa, EG: Otters as dogs, seals as bears, orcas as cats, etc. Flora too with sea sponges (yes I know they're animals technically) basically being bushes, land coral trees, etc. Also humans evolved from mermaids instead of apes.

Well, it's really not up yet. Nothing I want to share at first. I don't know it's not very fleshed out yet.
