Description
The last errand of the day was to go talk to Mrs Netty about earth magic. Although Tera currently worked for Lasso, who considered magic the cheats way to farming, he thought he might as well look into how he could learn it. It could be useful for the garden he was trying to make for their apartment building.
Magpie was pretty neutral about going for the most part, but Tera noticed that she immediately became uncomfortable when he mentioned that she was half quill, sparking a discussion about the magical benefits that could come from one's heritage. The subject was changed when Tera noted that he had no natural magic, but he made a note to ask her about it on the way back to Wynsiph.
"So... Why didn't you want to talk about your quill heritage?"
"It's none of your business." Magpie said, keeping her face carefully blank. "I didn't even tell you- you overheard me talking about it with Green."
"I mean it's not like you're being subtle about it; you've been using wind magic all day."
"Anyone can use wind magic. Despite what those pricks want you to believe, their 'natural talent' means jack shit in the big picture of things. Yeah yeah, they can make some piddly wind gusts when they're babies, but as soon as they grow up they're on the same ground as anyone else."
"But I mean..." Tera hesitated for a moment. "You've seen how young some of the quills with powerful wind magic are. Natural talent definitely plays a role in how skilled they are. Besides, I've never seen you pick up a book about wind magic, or attend any classes, you just... Did it. Surely you can see how your heritage is enhancing your skills."
Magpies hand balled into a fist. "So what, they can learn it faster. It just means they're used to things being easy, and as soon as it gets hard they'll give it up. Besides, wind magic is no easier than the water magic I've been learning."
"Well maybe you're half finn too. You never know."
"Stop trying to explain me by telling me who I'm related to!" Magpie roared. "It's stupid. All wyngrew can learn all magic, regardless of who they're related to."
"Yeah, but they can't use it as well as subspecies can. Gee, sometimes I wish I was born a subspecies... Imagine how cool it would be to be born with an inherent connection to magic."
"Plenty of normal gros are born with a connection to magic. I've been able to manipulate smoke since I was a baby, doesn't mean my mum was a Gorge. I knew kids at a hatchery who had ice magic, water magic, lightning magic, you name it but unless you were a quill you were considered a second class wyngling. They've taken these quote unquote natural talents and turned them into an excuse to act like they're better than everyone else. I thought that this town out of any would understand that, what with a gang of quills using the deelagun as an excuse to take control, but no! People are just grateful that Last Notch didn't abandon them to die, which should be the bare fucking minimum!"
"That's just politics though. it doesn't affect how normal quills are living."
"Kicking teenagers out of the Nook and into the terrible conditions of the Cranny isn't 'politics. Banning Finns from living in Last Notch isn't politics. Neglecting non-quill wynglings is not politics. It's abuse. And from what I've seen outside this friendly little town, where no one ever talks about anything bad, and it's all sunshine and rainbows and happiness, this sort of stuff is horrifyingly common."
"If you hate quills so much, why even learn their magic?"
"Wind magic doesn't belong to quills. Anyone can use wind magic, despite what they might want you to think." Magpie then sighed, and summoned a gust of wind. "Look, Tera. I don't want to be associated with Quills, but the ugly truth is that here in the Northwest territory that's an advantage. If I can learn a good amount of wind magic, I may be able to use the prestige of quills to my advantage one day." Magpie then dropped the wind magic.
It was a few minutes before Tera decided to speak again.
"You should try to reconnect with your quill heritage. You may have personal biases, but all the things Last Notch have done here are positive in the long run, even if most people can't see it. We didn't even have a chant before, and now we have one of the most prestigious lanterns in the world."
The rest of the walk was silent
