Description I finally finished a proper portrait of Azhar, an Aasimar cleric, the other character in the DnD game I've been playing over the last few months. He's a priest of Heironeous, here depicted in some more elegant priestly vestments instead of his regular armor.

I decided on gladioles, sometimes called sword lilies for the embroidery of the blue silky cloth, along with the longsword, the favored weapon of his god, and the classic lightning bolt

I still don't have a tablet, so I'm still working by mouse... which is why I took so long to finish the picture, it was mostly laziness, combined with a desire not to mess up haha

CREDITS:
pose reference: [link] , more specifically, this picture: [link]
other references: the magic item compendium, for the sword of virtue beyond reproach, which I altered only slightly from its original design.
Textures mostly from personal brushes, some from mayang.

lol yeah ^^ that's why he's one of the most difficult pieces in my gallery I got a tablet since, woot... but I'm still scared of going into something as challenging as this again even with one XD

The details in this are so wonderful - the texture of the hair, the design of the sword and especially the lacing on his shirt are so well done.

He's seriously fantastic looking! I can't get over the lips; that color choice is such a perfect, realistic tone for them. And I also love the pattern you chose for his clothing. It's like "masculine flowers." haha.

I also had the same crit that the skin looked overly-texturized (I think someone else referred to it as looking like sand, and I think that was spot on my impression), but I also saw that you liked the effect of it, given the character. I would agree to it then as a character choice, because it does give a removed, not of the norm sense to him. But it's definitely something to be careful of in other pics.

To end on an up-note: His eyes are shiney and beautiful. They're so well done. I think a certain Bella Swan would even find them dreamy. lol

haha and would you believe I thought of that too as I was coloring them yellow? XD in the books an aasimar's eyes are described as "molten gold"
*eyeroll, how bella-ish*

*lol* yeah, when I told the guy's playing azhar about the flower idea he was very afraid it'd look very queer haha XD but by the end of it all he was like, hey, it kinda works out XD
yes, I agree to be careful with the texture thing I'm working on a piece right now of sade, who has suuuuch delicate texture in comparison, I can definitely see why the sandy skin on azhar would make him look so odd

PurePeachy [2008-10-21 17:14:52 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I still can't believe you've been doing all these recent projects with a mouse! I love how this turned out!
He seems very alive (i.e. the shine in his eyes, the sweat around his collarbone, the wrinkles on his fingers, the fingernails, the vague background, etc.) I also really love how you did the metal necklace thing
Just one thing... I think it'd look great if you lower the opacity of the layer with the dots that create the skin texture just a little bit... cause otherwise it looks to me like he's covered in sand... but lower just a little bit (like subtract 30% from your current opacity or something... maybe even less) if you choose to do this
But this is really nice! And the edges between the character and the background are MUCH smoother and much more NATURAL, which makes all the difference in the world And the lighting on his skin looks very realistic too!
So yeah, I like this piece lol

thank you for the huge comment You're right on the skin texture being a little overboard, but I decided on leaving it to make him look a little less human a sandy texture kinda works for his race

madam-marla In reply to Quelfabulous [2008-10-21 14:10:48 +0000 UTC]

somehow the skin texture really helps me focus on the skin XD it's kinda weird, but I usually texture it very early on, not at the end of all shading like it's usually done *shrug* I am really glad you like it, thank you for the lovely comment
