I'm sure many of you have figured this out be now, but each of the Splat Fighters incorporates moves from fighting game characters across the spectrum into their styles. And so I figured I'd throw something together to better drive that point. I think came out pretty cool if I do say that myself!

Being the main(ish) character of Splat Fighter, it only made sense that Rosa would be a shoto fighter. The thing is that in the FGC (Fighting Game Community), the term "shoto" nowadays refers to basically any recurring fighting style practiced by the most central characters, so I had a lot of options. But I ended up having her take after Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter in the end because their Ansatsuken style is arguably the most recognizable. It also give her room to further improve, as its already been established that despite how strong she already, she still has work to do, particularly with the iconic Hadoken.

The decision to make Forest a ninja ultimately came from his color scheme, which lets him blend in with nature. The funny thing is, when it comes to ninjas in fighting games, most them opt for the super, over-the-top, Naruto-style of Ninjutsu rather than the more stealth-based, historically accurate representation. So I tried to go for a more balanced blend of the two, and the best candidates for me were Raven from the Tekken series for the latter, and Ryu Hayabusa from the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series for the former. He also takes from Strider Hiryu from the Strider and Marvel vs. Capcom series, but usually more when the Inkbrush comes out. I also thought it would be an interesting (and kinda funny) juxtaposition that a character as laid-back as him would be so skilled in such a technical style.

Choosing a fighting style for Viola was probably the toughest part for me. As I looked around, I realized that a lot characters of her sort of archetype had a peculiar art for kicking. I myself have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, so everything kind of fell into place from there. That said though, Tae Kwon Do is a style that has surprisingly limited representation in games, but the three I ended up having her draw from: Hwaorang from Tekken, Kim from The King of Fighters, and Juri from Street Fighter, I feel got the job done nicely.

As anyone with an Octoling OC will probably agree, its easy to assume that the Octolings are trained in military-style combat, and since I know very little about Eskrima, Combat Sambo was the obvious choice for me regarding Saphira. The two characters who's takes on the style came to mind first for me were Dragunov from Tekken (yes, I do happen to like Tekken a lot, why do you ask?) and Bayman from Dead or Alive. But also realized I needed to throw something a little more flashy into the mix as well. Saphira shows to be rather eccentric and a tad flamboyant after joining the Splat Fighters, and after taking another look around, Ralf from The King of Fighters and Ikari Warriors had exactly what I was looking for, both in fighting style and personality!
