"Our Beaten Hearts"

"We were once masters of the earth, the most powerful and knowledgeable of all beings. Yet, pride took the place of wisdom. Always we were reaching for more, and we tried to become masters of each other. Our greatness leaned and toppled inward upon itself, and when it did, everything smoldered around it. So few of us remain. So few of us remain to see the terrible scars we have left upon our earth, the scars that bring such despair and shame. When the dust is low, we scavenge for food and water. But there is no growth to replace what is taken, so every day there is less and less. The dust and grit and gases are always in our eyes, so that the tears beg to come but cannot. I can feel that we are going blind, and I think that the others can feel it as well, but I mustn't mention it. Every day our surroundings become darker, and every day our hopes become dimmer. I'd once thought that the world had ended with the great scourge and the spread of the dust and fumes...but I was wrong. The world will actually end some time not too far from now, when in our beaten hearts we decide that life is no longer worth the struggle to survive."
