Tuba Players of the World Unite!On -your- left is Amber and to your right is a young blond hippie me.
Technically we are posing with our Sousaphones since it was marching band season.
I am 5ft 4inches, 120 pounds. I went from playing a clarinet in our symphonic band to a Tuba. Clarinet for 4 years and Tuba/Sousaphone for 3 years.
I still have a hump in my shoulder from where the weight of the sousaphone sat.
Why? I was basically forced by our intimidating and very Italian-stereotyped band director. Evidently he must of had a bet with a rival band director on who they could fit their smallest student into a sousaphone.
Let's not toss it over to the kid who's pushing 6ft. who'd heft it around like it was a stuffed bear.
Fuck that bullshit; we give it to the scrawny goth girl!
I was a nerd.

The whole, manga/anime/videogames/graphic novels/etc. fascination didn't help much either but still.

First year of High School: Switched from Clarinet to Tuba.

<3 the pic! I'm fairly new to dA, but (naturally), the first thing I searched was tuba girl, and I got a couple pretty good results, this being one of them.
I can relate, I'm 5'3", 118 lbs, and both the smallest AND the younest in my section...but the section consists of 4 guys and 3 girls, thank god. xD

I think my band director won then. My fellow tuba and section leader one year was 4'9" and previously a flute player! My director also used her as an example. If anyone complained about being too tired to hold their instrument up, he would just point at her.

i went from alto sax to sousaphone.
it was like going from breathing air to breathing water but looking back i wouldnt change it ever. i cant imagine play an all brass sousa though. mines half like plumber pipe or something.

i had to lug one of those around for 6 years. i'm 6'1", and i still thought they were a pain in the ass. my first highschool band director was an alpha prick obsessed with john phillips sousa, so naturally all we did was march, and when marching season was over, we played marches at our concerts. i know. out-fucking-standing.
i was so grateful when we got a new director my senior year. he worshiped John Coltrane and marching band was optional.

Fucking awesome. XD Dude I swear it was the same with us. John Sousa all the way and marches until you wanted to gag. Every once in a while we got to do something fun; we had a fun little concert dedicated to the Pirates of the Carribean themes which was fun and alot of John Williams works from the movies.

we did this winter concert my junior year, and the symphonic band (of which i did not belong) was playing, so the concert band and i are all sitting up in the bleachers across from and next to the parents (my school was huge, three thousand six hundred kids) and they're playing the sleigh ride song, with the whip in it. so this kid has a 7 foot bull whip hes supposed to crack at the appropriate time, and well, it comes time for the whip crack, and he pulls back, it wraps around his music stand, he pulls forward and Kapow! a music stand is launched across the gym, and ALL 40 some pages of his sheet music comes raining down like huge snowflakes.
theres three seconds of dead silence, and explosion of laughter, and he runs out of the concert crying.
I really did feel bad for him, but at the same time, how do you not laugh?
