Mads chose to draw the blind, twelve-year-old, Hungar/Shotokan-using, self-professed (and accurately) best Eartbender ever, with a mean, sarcastic streak. Big surprise there. Just so you know, I like pretty much every female character on the show save for Azula, but Katara's hair loopies are pretty hard to nail down, and Suki is just too complex a prospect for a first time fanart foray.This one started out as a test drawing that turned out really well, and ended up a finished product. When I realized where it was going, I decided to make it a subtle antithesis of who Toph really is; note the high center of balance, narrow stance, delicate posture, and generally girlish bearing, topped of with a mildly confused, vulnerable air about her. So many fanartists have already captured her tomboyish, hilariously awesome side more than enough times, which left me free to explore a softer side to her, for which I am grateful. No, I don't know what that thing she's biting is.

i can draw all the femal characters(but that's just me) and katara's hair loopys are really easy. i don't like katara.so i don't draw her. my fave character is toph. she rox out loud. my second fave one is suki.

Tomboyish or girly, she always looks like somebody you wouldn't want to anger.

I actually don't think Toph's the best Earthbender ever.
Just because, since day one, the opening title sequence has had the same four characters in it, who seem to be the best Benders their element has to offer. The master from the North Pole for Water, Aang for Air, and Azula for Fire. But the Earthbender in the opening isn't Toph.

Katara's a mightier waterbender than Pakku, I'd say. Or else Ozai than Azula. You can't have it both ways; for raw potential, Katara beats Pakku and Azula might beat Ozai, but for current levels, Ozai is more than Azula, and I'm not sure about Pakku and Katara....

Well, we don't know that Ozai's better. The only real evidence we have for that is that he's Fire Lord, which doesn't necessarily have a lot to do with skill.
I'm sure sometime this season we'll see if he's better, especially if he takes advantage of the comet, but I'd bet anything that Azula's going to wind up with that power.
And I don't think Katara's better than Pakku. Pakku was still her teacher when she left, after all, it's not like they'd flipped around to her teaching him stuff, heh.

If the final battle is being set up for Aang vs. Ozai, Ozai has to be better. If he's not as strong as Azula, then he's not worth the final battle.
Katara progressed faster than any of Pakku's students, and continued growing. She is to waterbending what Azula is to firebending--a prodigy.

Yeah,I would say that Katara and Pakku are on the same level.Pakku has been trained for years and is very experienced,whereas Katara posseses the natural ,raw talent and determination.Plus,now she has been trained,so I certainly would say their as good as each other.

I don't think it complies to greatest bender, simply because it was made during the first episode and Toph's character was made and approved just before the first episode of second season. They almost wanted to use the Kissing Bandit for Aang's teacher but instead went with Toph.
And yes, it still complies because Azula was a planned character since Zuko was made. Before her character was even made, she had a cameo that drove fans crazy as to who she was. When Iroh is telling Zuko's crew about why Zuko was banished, we see her and Iroh watching Zuko get burned by their father.
Before they add a character, they plan out their character development and background. That's probably why they showed Toph's background in that whole episode, where as Aang, Zuko, Katara and Sokka had several episodes over a length describing their pasts and further developing their characters.
The opening sequence is, like demon said, just to show us what bending is and what are the elements and some forms to power these elements.
I'd say Toph is best because she is the only earthbender to use sothern praying mantis style.

'Seems' being the operational word here. I can give two easy reasons for that. One, from an expositionary point of view, it wouldn't do at all to reveal the existence of a small, twelve-year-old girl Earthbender, as the shock of contrast between power and physical status was one of the great selling points of Toph's first appearance. Two, the opening sequence has four benders and an Avatar to demonstrate each of the bending powers, but this does not necessarily say anything about their respective skills at it, whether they are the best or not.
Because if you went by that standard, Azula would be implied to be a better bender than Fire Lord Ozai himself, which may be possible, but highly unlikely.
Having said all that, this IS still a show where the Fire Nation has steam-level technology that can produce a giant honking drill. It IS possible that there is a better Earthbender and even a better fighter than Toph... but I really doubt that he/she would be any more awesome as a character.
Thus: TOPH IS THE BEST EARTHBENDER EVER!!
