i'm thinking about buying the cheaper f1.8 50mm.. is the fixed 50mm any good? is it useful to things other than portraits?

well, of course it's better - it costs double.
I hardly got the money for my 500D + kit lens, but that lens is totally lame. I'm looking for something cheap and better performance (sharpness, F\stops distortion ect.).
prime 50mm lens is a natural move from here

well, i shot nearly all of the photos in the mentioned gallery with the 50mm 1.8, excepting the newest one. So if the sharpness is enough for you, there's no reason for not buying it!

If money is tight, you might consider bying an adapter for M42 lenses which would open a whole new world of different (old) lenses to you. Manual only though! No autofocus, no auto ISO, shutterspeed or aperture. Good for learning though!

I was shoting only full manual for the first month, to get to know the camera and to better understand shutter speed, aperture, ISO ect. I still shot full manual a lot, or semi-auto ("Av" mode and "Tv" mode)
That is a very good advice! I'll give it a try. Old lenses is something I always loved
I just bought (really just now, like five hours ago) a nice 50mm 1.8. I wanted the sigma 70-300, but it was out of stock.. the rest of the telephoto line at that price point were lame, so I got myself the sharpest lens I could find^^ so for now I'm done with new lenses (FOR NOW..)
