Backstory: This is Dr. Alan Grant's 19-year-old niece, Katherine "Kate" Morgan. She is a geology student at a Montana university who has an interest in fossils and most species of dinosaurs. One day, however, a crisis occurs in her close family (possibly a death of a loved one), and her mother decides to have her stay with Alan for the time being. For most of her life, Kate and her uncle have had a rocky relationship on the count that Alan isn't real interested in children. But shortly after Kate gets acquainted with her uncle and his paleobotanist friend, Dr. Ellie Sadler, a man named John Hammond makes them an offer to visit his private island off the coast of Costa Rica. Kate comes with John, Alan, Ellie, Ian Malcolm, and a lawyer named Donald Gennaro (whom Kate finds to be very annoying) to the island, which is home to a soon-to-be theme park called Jurassic Park with genetically cloned dinosaurs. During a tour of the island, Kate and the others befriend John's grandchildren, Lex and Tim Murphy. But soon, there is a storm and the powers all around the park are shut off, causing the dinosaurs to run loose. Alan and Kate manage to rescue Tim and Lex from a T-Rex, but soon they all find themselves in the middle of the wild dinosaur park. While trying to avoid hungry predators, Kate starts to rebuild her relationship with her uncle, who also starts to form a bond with the kids.
