Actually, there was a moment at the start of What is This Feeling (just saw the Musical, intend on reading the book asap) when I almost expected them to become a couple, but I actually prefer Elphie and Fiyero, although Gelphie is still a close second.

No trolling intended, but in the play at least, you need a LOT of subtext to stretch their relationship that far. "Elphie, now that we're friends...", "We're just two friends, two good friends, two best friends....", "I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend...." And not to mention the whole part where both of them are obviously in love with Fiyero.
Though as far as the book goes, you may have a point. At least on Glinda's side of things.
